The Broken Vow
Converge Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The sleep that fled me and the heart I lost
It all reminds me
Just how callous and heartless the true cowards are
And I write this for the loveless
And for the risks we take
I'll take my love to the grave
As tired and worn it is
The lyrics of Converge's song "The Broken Vow" are an emotional outpouring of the pain and anguish that can come with lost trust and broken relationships. The verses expertly capture the despair and emptiness that can result from such a painful experience. The first line, "Those nights we had and the trust we lost," hints at the intensity of the relationship that has now crumbled. The singer's inability to sleep and the loss of his heart are both clear indicators of how deeply he has been affected by the failed romance.
The second half of the verse is a powerful indictment of the "true cowards" who have caused the singer so much pain. The use of the word "callous" suggests that these individuals were unfeeling and unconcerned with the consequences of their actions. The chorus provides a cathartic release for the singer as he proclaims that he will take his love to the grave, regardless of how worn and tired it may be. This declaration is a testament to the strength of his emotions and his refusal to let the hurt and betrayal defeat him completely.

Easily one of the best songs ever written. It's a monument not only on this masterpiece of an album, and in genre of metalcore, and in all of rock music as a whole, but of all music created. Never have I heard such a short song that has so many parts and gives each of those parts a chance to find meaning within the context of the song, and become recognizably catchy within just a snapshot of time. For a song with such abrasion the melodic and rhythmic aspects are incredibly clear, and paint a beautiful image of sadness, anger, unrequited love, denial, and pain. All of that doesn't even give the idea of a fraction of the artistic beauty this song exists in. Sheer excellence.
