Origin of Jenkins Stage Name--------- Jenkins felt that his real name wasn't marketable, and he changed his show business name in 1957. (Harold Lloyd Jenkins would always remain his legal name, however). Looking at a road map, he spotted Conway, Arkansas and Twitty, Texas. Thus, he went with the professional name of "Conway Twitty".[citation needed]
Alternatively, Jenkins met a Richmond, VA, man named W. Conway Twitty Jr. through Jenkins' manager in a New York City restaurant. The manager served in the army with the real Conway Twitty. Later, the manager suggested to Jenkins that he take the name as his stage name because it had a ring to it. The Richmond Conway Twitty subsequently recorded the song, "What's in a Name But Trouble," in the mid-1960s, lamenting the loss of his name to Jenkins. The flip side of the 45 RPM record was "The Purple, Purple People Eater, Eater." (The more well known version of Purple People Eater, however, now having sold over 100,000,000 copies, was recorded by Sheb Wooley.)
Happy Birthday Darlin'

I've decided not to give you a present this year
In fact I think it's about time I took some things away
I'd like to take away this suspicion that I know clouds your world at times
By giving you some faith to hold on to honey whenever your hand is not in mine
Happy birthday darlin' I've no presents, no fancy cake
But I hope I'll make you happy with everything I take
I'd like to take away some of your lonely moments, by spendin' more of mine with you
And I'd like to take away some of those so-so kisses
And replace them with ones that really say I love you
And I wanna take away the doubt you sometimes have about my love
By showin' more much more that I've shown lately
And then if someone said asked you what I've got you for your birthday
Well you can say, why, he didn't give me anything, but he sure took a lotta things away
Happy birthday darlin' I've no presents, no fancy cake
But I hope I'll make you happy with everything I take
Happy birthday darlin' I've no presents, no fancy cake
But I hope I'll make you happy with everything I take
Happy birthday darlin'
In Conway Twitty's "Happy Birthday Darling," the singer is speaking directly to his lover on her birthday. However, instead of offering birthday presents or elaborate celebrations, the singer decides to take things away. He wants to remove the suspicion she may have about their relationship, and give her more faith and trust in him. He also wants to take away her moments of loneliness, by spending more time with her. He wants to replace mediocre kisses with passionate ones that show his love for her. Lastly, he wants to take away her doubts about his love by showing her more affection than he has lately.
The song is a poignant reflection on a relationship that needs work. The singer is aware that his lover has some uncertainties, but instead of ignoring them, he wants to address them head on. By taking these things away and showing more of himself, he hopes to demonstrate his love for her. This song speaks to the importance of communication and effort in a relationship. Even on a birthday - a day that is often associated with presents and celebration - the singer wants to use the occasion to work on their relationship.
