Origin of Jenkins Stage Name--------- Jenkins felt that his real name wasn't marketable, and he changed his show business name in 1957. (Harold Lloyd Jenkins would always remain his legal name, however). Looking at a road map, he spotted Conway, Arkansas and Twitty, Texas. Thus, he went with the professional name of "Conway Twitty".[citation needed]
Alternatively, Jenkins met a Richmond, VA, man named W. Conway Twitty Jr. through Jenkins' manager in a New York City restaurant. The manager served in the army with the real Conway Twitty. Later, the manager suggested to Jenkins that he take the name as his stage name because it had a ring to it. The Richmond Conway Twitty subsequently recorded the song, "What's in a Name But Trouble," in the mid-1960s, lamenting the loss of his name to Jenkins. The flip side of the 45 RPM record was "The Purple, Purple People Eater, Eater." (The more well known version of Purple People Eater, however, now having sold over 100,000,000 copies, was recorded by Sheb Wooley.)

Now you're puttin' on the style.
And you never once looked back
At your home across the tracks.
Your the gossip of the town
But my heart can still be found
Where you tossed it on the ground.
Hey, pick me up on your way down
When you're blue and all alone.
When their glamor starts to bore you
Come on back where you belong.
You may be their pride and joy
But they'll find another toy
And they'll take away your crown
Pick me up on your way down.
They have changed your attitude,
Made you haughty and so rude.
Your new friends can take the blame
But underneath you're still the same.
When you learn these things are true
I'll be waiting here for you
As you tumble to the ground,
Pick me up on your way down.
Hey, pick me up on your way down
When you're blue and all alone.
When their glamor starts to bore you
Come on back where you belong.
You may be their pride and joy
But they'll find another toy.
Then they'll take away your crown,
Pick me up on your way down
In the poignant lyrics of Conway Twitty's "Pick Me Up On Your Way Down," we encounter a heartfelt plea from the singer to a former lover who has seemingly moved on to a more glamorous and sophisticated lifestyle. The opening lines set the tone of nostalgia and longing as the singer reflects on the fleeting nature of their relationship, lamenting how the lover has seemingly forgotten their humble beginnings "across the tracks."
As the song progresses, we see the singer grappling with the stark reality of seeing their ex-lover transformed into a figure of gossip and social status, yet still yearning for the connection and love they once shared. The theme of betrayal and abandonment reverberates through the lines, as the singer recounts how their heart was callously discarded by the lover when they ascended the social ladder.
The chorus serves as the emotional core of the song, with the singer imploring the ex-lover to remember their roots and return to where they truly belong when the facade of glamour fades and loneliness sets in. The juxtaposition of the ex-lover's newfound status as "pride and joy" with the inevitability of being discarded once another shiny object catches the eye underscores the transient nature of superficial relationships.
Towards the end of the song, there is a sense of resignation and bittersweet hope as the singer waits patiently for the ex-lover's inevitable fall from grace, ready to offer solace and support in their moment of vulnerability. The closing lines encapsulate the essence of the singer's plea, echoing the sentiment of unconditional love and acceptance despite the ex-lover's betrayals and transformations. Overall, "Pick Me Up On Your Way Down" is a poignant ballad that explores themes of loyalty, forgiveness, and the enduring nature of true love amidst the fickleness of external glamour and societal expectations.
