As someone with autism and ADHD who is still in their childhood (I’m 14) I’ve suffered bullying in school since I was around 8. I don’t really remember because I didn’t understand I was being bullied until I was about 11. People with autism can react without thinking and I think that happened to this boy. He was provoked. People with autism can have higher emotional responses, especially children. I live in the UK and children under 10 can’t be placed with criminal charges. I hope, 5 years later things have changed and this won’t happen again.

I know this comment is a few months old but I just wanna say that I'm sorry you've gone through that. I'm autistic and was bullied at that age too, it always breaks my heart a little to see kids go through the same thing, but as an adult I can say that things do get better. Once I got out of high school things improved immensely, you just gotta hold on until then.

Edit: I’m not defending what they arrested him for, and I think it was definitely to far. However, correct me if I’m wrong, I believe he punched the teacher, not the kid who was bullying him. I wouldn’t consider it self defense. They definitely should have gotten the child bullying him in trouble, which I hope they did.

I am autistic and this sickens me to my core. I have had similar problems like this but not getting arrested and I did get punished like every other kid would. I was throwing chairs at people in 2 grade and I just got ISS. He was just fighting back and defending himself. The most likely reason (Due to my experience) is probably that is mistook the teacher for another bully so he hit them. This is just awful and sickening.

@@garrettromer8499 the problem in this case is the fact that the kid couldn’t think properly. First of all he is autistic. Now that it self is already a big problem when it comes to logic and thinking straight. Another reason is the fact that the kid was bullied prior to the fight at recess. Now anybody knows its 10x harder for a kid with autism to just stop listening to bullies. Plus the fact that the teacher took the side of the bullies shows us that she didn’t care. That also must have triggered something in the kid’s head causing him to punch the teacher.

1. Having a criminal record for something we did, isn't what makes our wrongdoings wrong. If what the boy did wasn't wrong, then it's not wrong - the 'criminal record' can't just make it wrong if it's not. God is just: if what the boy did isn't wrong, surely it wouldn't make him punished.

2. Even if what he did was wrong, there's still a chance that he won't be condemned; because God is merciful enough to forgive sins.

I feel really scared watching this. Poor Devin is only a kid, and he has autism. He shouldn't have gotten arrested, and he never deserved to get bullied. It wasn't his fault. He was only trying to defend himself. Those schools should be ashamed of themselves for calling the cops on that child and traumatizing him like that, especially since he didn't do anything wrong. I have autism as well, and I remember getting upset all the time and having violent outbursts during 4th grade when I was nine years old. Watching this made me imagine what it would've been like if my school went on lockdown and I got arrested during the 4th grade at nine years old after one of my violent outbursts. Not only is he underage to be legally arrested, that’s an extremely excessive punishment for a third grader especially one with autism. The fact that this all happened because the kid was defending himself and because the teacher couldn’t do their job properly makes this even worse. I also can’t overlook the fact the school said they this was with “compassion” and handled “calmly” says that none of that happened before either the parents or more likely the cops came if that there is a form of compassion I speak for us all when I say I’m worried about the kids that go there.

When I was in elementary school way long ago, I had a similar thing happen. I was only in the second grade at the time, and there was this boy with more severe autism who had just transferred. Our school didn't have special education teachers since it wasn't common then, and our elementary school was super underfunded. One day, the kid had a meltdown, and the teachers tried tackling him and then would call the police and ambulance on him. We never saw him again, and even years later, I wonder if he's okay. My heart goes out to the boy in his video.

The teacher who got hit by this kid went too far. She should never have pressed charges. Did the boy need punished? Yes, but all this way too much. What happened to after-school and Saturday detention. What happened to the days when kids got into fights at schools their punishment was to help the janitor clean the school on saturdays 8 hours. And also what happened to the days when kids were encouraged to stand up and fight their bullies. When I was a kid, I had to do that a few times to stop bullies from picking on me.

Oooh i remember one time, our 2nd grade teacher threatened to call local juvenile hall authorities because of a stealing issue with 5 pencil packs and thought it was our section. We did have this problem for a while in our school. The teacher made the entire explanation about juvenile hall scary asf, and gave us 1 choice. Confess, and say "bye" or "im sorry". One student ended up having to go to the office and everyone freaked out and thought of the worst. For me i was also quite paranoid. On the way to an elective, some freaked out students were crying and the teacher was trying to calm them down and then told us that the student is okay and just had to go to the principals for a talk, yet, wasnt that a little too far?

I’ve worked as a 1:1 teacher for kiddos with behavioral struggles. A majority of my kids would occasionally lash out/have episodes of hitting, kicking biting, etc. I’m concerned and disappointed about the way the school handled this.
