For me, understanding certain aspects of music theory has been extremely helpful. Simply memorizing the phrase "(B)ig (C)ats (E)at (F)ast" unlocks the ability to locate ANY note on the fretboard.

For those curious: the phrase is used to memorize the spacing of notes.

Start on the A string
Move up 2 frets to be on (B) - open A string counts as a "fret"
Move up 1 fret to be on (C)
Move up 2 frets to be on D
Move up 2 feets to be on (E)
Move up 1 fret to be on (F)
Move up 2 frets to be on G

Notice the only notes that move up 1 fret are B(ig) to C(ats)... and... E(at) to F(ast).
Now, every note not counted for can be considered a flat of the note before it OR a sharp of the note after. An example would be the fret between F and G could be considered an F sharp or a G flat... they are the exact same tone.
These fret spacings are simply the intervals between notes on your fretboard. You can apply this knowledge to any string to find ANY note... from there you can find basically any chord, all you have to do is know your chord shapes! Once you know various shapes, you can really start to compound all sorts of other tips and tricks, like the one shown in the video here to really LEARN to PLAY.

Knowing a large arsenal of songs created by other people is great. But nothing compares to being able to sit and jam to your hearts desire and bring forth into reality the music you hear and feel in your soul.

Over the years, I’ve come to realize that the notes on the fretboard just live where they live. They don’t move. They don’t DO anything. Learning to play is really a matter of discovering all the different ways to “see” the relationships between the notes. Eventually, this knowledge starts to build on itself and you start conceptualizing the same information in different ways. This is one such way, and it’s one I hadn’t really encountered before. Super helpful and very enlightening. Thanks so much! 🙏👍

it's interesting that we have the guitar and theres really nothing visual about the strings that can inform you what notes they are, but we have the advantage of having harmonic and melodic shapes that work similarly across all keys (the relationships between the notes so to speak), whereas the piano you have the advantage that you CAN visually see exactly which notes are which easily, but then the melodic and harmonic shapes necessarily have to change from key to key
