Broken Mirror
Coretta Scott Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Holding out for sleep
Holding out for something special she says "god, we ruined special long ago"
And there's gotta be something
Perpetuate the most intolerable of dreams thus far known
The couch as the bloody scene
My God if you hurt her, then you're talking to me
Our frailty like our skin will never have to be exposed
Excuses why you never got out
The bruises makeup would never cover
A single regret, forceps and I guess that's it yeah
But I was like you once
Never again
The couch as the bloody scene
And my God in heaven if you ever touch her again
Then you're talking to me
In “Broken Mirror,” Coretta Scott sings about a woman who is broken and holding out for something special. The woman mentions that God, and people in general, have ruined the concept of special a long time ago. The lyrics then shift to a more ominous tone, where the woman is stuck in an intolerable dream, imagining a couch as a bloody crime scene. Coretta Scott warns that if anyone hurts this woman, then they will have to deal with her.
The song seems to highlight the struggles and pain that people go through in life. The imagery of the broken mirror conveys the idea of a shattered identity, a person who is broken and trying to make sense of their life. The woman in the song is holding out for something special, which suggests a need for hope and purpose. However, the dream she is in makes it seem like her situation is dire and desperate, perhaps even violent. The line, “The bruises makeup would never cover,” implies that there is abuse or violence involved in this woman’s life.
Overall, “Broken Mirror” is a song that delves into the complexities of human emotions and the struggles that people face in their lives. It speaks to the inherent need for hope and purpose, as well as the pain and suffering that can afflict people. The potent imagery of the lyrics creates a sense of unease and distress, while also highlighting the strength and resilience of the human spirit.
