Slowburn
Corey Hart Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well it's another scar-branded night for a showdown
That gunslinger is merciless, crafty and cool
Each minute ridicules my every heartbeat
I never conceived that it could be so cruel

Oh yeah
sweet intrusion come and rescue me
'Cause refuge seems so far away
'Cause here I am blindfolded
And born to a heart that will not learn

There can be no pretending
There can be no defending
Against the slow burn
Don't give it up

Said don't you give it up now?
No, no, no, no

Yeah
Yeah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Corey Hart's song Slowburn depict a desperate, almost hopeless struggle against a powerful and merciless foe. The singer understands that he is outmatched, and his every effort is met with ridicule and disdain. He reaches out for a "sweet intrusion" to rescue him from his predicament, but even as he stands blinded and vulnerable, he knows that his heart will not learn. Despite the odds against him, he refuses to give up, recognizing that there can be no pretending or defending against the slow burn of his opponent.

This song can be interpreted in many ways, but most people see it as a metaphor for life's struggles. The "gunslinger" might represent anything from a physical illness to a financial crisis or a personal adversary. The fact that the fight is described as a "slow burn" suggests that it is a long and drawn-out one, with little hope of a quick or easy resolution. However, the message of the song is clear: even in the face of overwhelming odds, one should never give up hope or give in to despair.

A correction: the song was released on Hart's 1986 LP Fields of Fire, not 1990's Bang. Hart is also known for writing his own material, not co-writing his material, especially early in his career. He wrote Blind Faith solely. Lastly, Blind Faith was not released as a single and had no music video. Not sure where the facts are coming from, but really facts.
