Home Sweet Home
Corinne Morgan and Frank C. Stanley Lyrics

The wind whispers sweet nothings in your ear tonight
We're driving toward a whole lot a' nothing
But it ain't worth the fight
Everyone's lookin' for something
We live, and we breathe, and we die
Everyone's searching for something
To bring meaning into their lives
Driving home
Driving home
Yeah
Driving home
But you sure love the road
There was hope in your eyes yesterday
Everyone's lookin' for something
But we never stop to ask ourselves why
Everyone's searchin' for something
But we'd still sell our souls for a price
Driving home
Driving home
Yeah
Driving home
But you sure love the road
Everyone's lookin' for something
But we never stop to ask ourselves why
Everyone's searching for something
But we'd still sell our souls for a price
Driving home
Driving home
Yeah
Driving home

But you sure love the road
Driving home

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Corinne Morgan and Frank C. Stanley's song Home Sweet Home speak to the universal desire for purpose and meaning in life. The first verse describes the emptiness of driving towards nothing, but how it's not worth the fight to try to find something more. The wind whispers sweet nothings in your ear, perhaps tempting you to continue searching but acknowledging that it's a difficult journey. Everyone is searching for something, whether it's love, success, or inner peace, as we live, breathe, and eventually die. The chorus is an on-the-nose description of the song itself - driving home, but you sure love the road. It's a metaphor for how we're all trying to get to our "home sweet home," whatever that may be, but we also enjoy the journey along the way.

The second verse continues with the theme of searching, with hope in your eyes yesterday that has perhaps faded today. Again, everyone is looking for something, but they don't stop to ask themselves why they're doing it. The final lines of the song strike a darker note, saying that we'd still sell our souls for a price, implying that we're willing to compromise our values and beliefs in order to attain that thing we're searching for. But in the end, it's all just driving home, with the road being both a symbol of the journey and the destination itself.

Overall, the lyrics to Home Sweet Home are insightful and thought-provoking, speaking to the universal human experience of searching for purpose and meaning.

I own a copy of Home Sweet Home by Corinne Morgan, but my 78 is a different version -- Corinne doesn't reach for the high notes near the end (3:08). My record also has the Victor label design that was commonly used after 1910. The song dates back to 1823, so it was considered a standard even in 1908. Corinne was born in Commercial Point OH, near Columbus, in 1876 and is considered a pioneer recording artist of the acoustic era. Most of her Victor recordings date from 1904-1909. Corrine died in 1942 at the age of 66.
