Holier
Corrosion of Conformity Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Holier, much holier than you were before
No more
Now your purpose, Jesus, flowing in your soul
No more
Feel complete what a nice retreat to the call
No more
The wrath of God will serve you well as bodies fall
In hate
Finding the answers, distoring the question
Ending all possibilities for things to change
Rotting in your empty shell
Writhing in relentless hell
It's death you chose, you chose it well
In your mind you've found it
In my mind, where's your God? He's in your head

In their minds, they've found it
In my mind, where's your God? He's in your head

Overall Meaning

The song “Holier” by Corrosion of Conformity is a commentary on religious fanaticism and extremism. The opening verse speaks of the transformation of an individual who has gone from being a regular person to someone who is “holier than before”. The person has found their purpose in life, which is to serve Jesus, and they feel complete as a result. The chorus of the song states that the wrath of God will serve this person well, as bodies fall. This suggests that the fanaticism of this person has led them to believe that they are doing the work of God, even if it involves violence or harm to others.

The second verse of the song speaks of how the individual has become so consumed by their faith that they no longer question their beliefs. In fact, they have started to distort the very question of faith to suit their own beliefs. The bridge of the song speaks of the person’s descent into a state of hopelessness and despair. They feel trapped in their own beliefs and are writhing in their own version of hell. The final verse speaks of the disagreement between the singer and the religious fanatic. The singer questions the fanatic’s belief in God, asking where God is in their mind, implying that their fanaticism is their own creation.
