Girls Just Want to Have Fun
Cory Monteith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I came home in the middle of the night
My father says what you gonna do with your life?
Well lady dear, you're still number one
Oh girls they wanna have fun
Oh girls they

The phone rings in the middle of the night,
My mother says when you gonna live your life right?
Well mother dear
We're not the fortunate ones
Oh girls they wanna have fun
Oh girls they they

It's all they really want
Those girls they wanna have fun

Some boys take a beautiful girl
Oh and they hide her away from the rest of the world
Well not me I wanna be the one in the sun
Girls they wanna have fun
Oh girls they they

That's all they really want
Those girls they wanna have fun

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Cory Monteith and Kevin McHale's rendition of "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" depict the desire and freedom of adolescent girls. The opening stanza sees the singer coming home late at night and being questioned by their father about their future plans. The response given is that the girls simply want to have fun. The second stanza portrays a similar situation where the singer's mother worries about her lifestyle choices, and once again, the response is that girls just want to have fun.

The chorus of the song repeats the phrase, "girls just want to have fun" multiple times, emphasizing the point that girls do not want to be tied down by societal expectations or traditions. The final stanza describes how the singer wants to be with the girl who is "in the sun," suggesting that they do not want to hide or restrict their partner's independence.

Overall, the lyrics suggest a carefree attitude towards life, with the desire to enjoy every moment and not be weighed down by the expectations of others.

This hits so different now. That bond they shared. It wasn’t Finn singing to Santana, it was Cory singing to Naya. The emotion in the song was too real. Naya was found dead on Cory’s anniversary and I just know they are together now joking and smiling.

Santana even said that Cory singing this song was so emotional for her

I really wonder if Cory Monteith sang this song live because he had to in order for Santana to get emotional or at least that emotional

This is actually one of the nicest things Finn did for anyone, I mean, he helped a lot of people, but he really helped Santana with this and probably saved her from herself :)

In an interview Naya said her direction was to sit and listen, but Naya said While Cory was singing she couldn't help but cry. It was Cory and Naya not Finn and Santana and was so special. He was a special guy!
