Don't Stop Believin'
Cory Monteith and Lea Michele Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Just a small town girl
Livin' in a lonely world
She took the midnight train goin' anywhere

Just a city boy
Born and raised in South Detroit
He took the midnight train goin' anywhere
A singer in a smokey room
The smell of wine and cheap perfume
For a smile they can share the night
It goes on and on and on and on

Strangers waiting
Up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searchin' in the night

Streetlight, people
Livin' just to find emotion
Hidin' somewhere in the night

Workin' hard to get my fill
Everybody wants a thrill
Payin' anythin' to roll the dice
Just one more time

Some will win, some will lose
Some are born to sing the blues
And now the movie never ends
It goes on and on and on and on

Strangers waiting
Up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searchin' in the night

Streetlight, people
Livin' just to find emotion
Hidin' somewhere in the night

Don't stop believin'
Hold on to that feelin'
Streetlight, people

Don't stop believin'
Hold on to that feelin'
Streetlight, people

Don't stop!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Don't Stop Believin'" by Cory Monteith and Lea Michele are a powerful and motivational reflection of the struggles that life brings and how the hope within us can overcome them. In the verses, we see two people from vastly different backgrounds coming together on a train ride to who knows where, living in the moment, and enjoying the journey with each other. Maybe they don't have everything figured out, but they are happy to see what life throws their way.

The chorus of the song, "Don't stop believin', hold on to that feelin'," is a mantra for anyone going through tough times. Acknowledging that life can be difficult or unpredictable, the song encourages listeners, regardless of where they are from or what they are doing, to keep pushing forward, to find the good in moments that might feel less than perfect, and to believe in themselves, even when the world feels like it's against them.

As the song progresses, we're reminded that no matter what, we're all just people, searching for emotion and connection, hiding somewhere in the night. The final line of the song, "Don't Stop," signals both the end of the song and the promise that no matter what, we'll keep pushing through until we find what we're looking for.

I was an ignorant teenager when this show originally came out and I hated it, and now, I JUST finished the whole show today after binging it on Netflix the last 2 weeks or so. I sobbed at this, you don’t realise it when you first watch this episode but you can see the pure chemistry between Rachel and Finn/Lea and Cory here, and knowing what happens after is just so tragic. I love this show now and I’m so glad I watched it. RIP Cory.
