Elvis has laid a chunk on the groundwork for a more intelligent world, and for that he should be commended by all. I'm not trying to start a religion, but even in that, Elvis has brought something to a spiritual wellbeing. That's how his music worked for me anyway. Beautiful stuff, all.

One of his best since his first 5 or 6 initial records. It took him long enough to get back to rock and aways from smaltz country and crooner. He is one of the greats though because of his first records.

I live near where the diner video version was recorded. I just ate at the Agawam Diner. I've been searching for the video for many years, to no avail. Does anyone know why it's been buried?

Such a great song does not merit such an awful, inane video.
The director must have thought it was Punch the Clock and had the idea to give out a Bunch of Clocks ! No wonder Declan looks bemused.

The lyrics refer to a lot of different things. The year World War II ended ("Bells are chiming for victory / There's a page back in history / 45"), the rpm of a vinyl record ("There's a record, so you put it on / 45"), a popular caliber of gun ("'Perhaps he's got a shot and now he's dead' / 45"), an age ("It creeps up on you without a warning / 45"). Sure, the lyrics don't refer to clocks, but they don't /just/ refer to vinyl records either.

well 45 is a big age for vinyl lovers....so its about aging, mortality...making giving things away to others as we move through life...thats all i got.

45 has three meanings: an age, a record format and a year. The song is about a look back at one's life through the lens of music. It starts with his parents' generation in 1945 post-war, through his own life, birth of children, divorce ("which is yours and which is mine?"), etc. It's such a masterful song. I found it incredibly moving when it came out and I was only 24, barely old enough to have a life of my own, and at 42 it's even more powerful. You know what makes me feel old? I was far too young to have followed Costello's career in real-time. He's one of those artists who I had to discover historically, but I vividly recall this being described as a "comeback" and I still think of it as his most recent comeback (after Brutal Youth). Well, it's almost 20 years old lol, so how "recent" can that be?

@Adam P Thanks so much for explaining it like this. I get it so much more now too. Watching it again, I see everyone is coming at him to get a clock which equals their life. That's why around 1:32 the cheerleader was so determined: there's no way will I allow you not to have a clock for me.. and he's like, ok! here, I will draw one for you!... and it was just a drawing but she was most happy and grateful for that life! It's not just a clock drawing, it's a life! It's very moving.
I think the last clock was for the whole world...
