My God, Lester Young literally reinvented the tenor saxophone. Before Prez came along, the way to play the tenor sax was the way Coleman Hawkins played it. But Prez played with a relaxed, cool tone and used sophisticated harmonies that influenced every saxophonist that came after him, from Charlie Parker to John Coltrane.

Rest In Peace Prez 🙏🏾🎷

This song perfectly illustrates Young's cool tone and style. Such a calm way of playing he had yet also very funky and rhythmic.

This is the best version of "Lester Leaps" on Youtube, closest to the airy, breezy sound of the original recording, without the abrasiveness that comes for excessive boosting of the treble frequencies.

Basie is good in small groups or big band. He always had excellent tenor sax players.

As a teen in the early 1970s, I actually heard two JATP versions of Lester Leaps in before finding these small group recordings. There was the 1949 Carnegie Hall Concert where the JATP All-Stars where Lester Young gets the first solo. There was from the first JATP concert in Los Angeles with Illinois Jacquet, J.J. Johnson, Nat Cole on piano, Led Paul on electric guitar

... and Lester's brother Lee Young on drums, plus others. Jacquet is honking and screeching.

I also saw a band with no drummer play Lester Leaps In in France in an old movie from the late 1930s or early 1940s.

Lester Leaps in a d Jumpin' with Symphony Sid were great small group numbers with Lester Young on Tenor Sax.

I don't see how ANYONE could give this a thumbs down.😍😍😍

Simply wonderful.

"Lester Leaps In" and "Lester Leaps Again" -- two of the best songs that never get covered by other artists. Kind of a "My Name is Prince" type situation, I guess....
