Low
Counting Crows Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sometimes I wanna take you down,
Sometimes I wanna get you low,
Brush your hair back from your eyes,
Take you down let the river flow,
Sometimes I wanna walk the street,
Behind the green sheet of glass,
A million miles below your feet,
A million miles, a million miles.

I'll be with you girl, like being low,
Hey, hey, hey like being stoned,
I'll be with you girl, like being low,
Hey, hey, hey like being stoned.

A million poppies gonna make me sleep,
But just one rose who knows your name,
The fruit is rusting on the vine,
The fruit is calling from the trees,
Hey oh don't you wanna go down,
Like some displaced cosmonaut,
A million miles a million miles,
A million miles a million miles.

Be with you girl, like being low,
Hey, hey, hey like being stoned,
I'll be with you girl, like being low,
Hey, hey, hey like being stoned.

Blue, blue is the sun,
And brown, brown is the sky,
Green, green of her eyes,
A million miles, a million miles,
Hey, oh don't you wanna go down,
Like some junkie cosmonaut,
A million miles below your feet,
A million miles, a million miles.

Be with you girl, like being low,
Hey, hey, hey like being stoned,
I'll be with you girl, like being low,
Hey, hey, hey like being stoned.

Be with you girl, like being low,
Hey, hey, hey like being stoned,

Be with you girl, like being low,
Hey, hey, hey like being stoned.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Counting Crows' song "Low" are about being torn between different desires and emotions. The singer alternates between wanting to bring someone down and wanting to let go and flow with the river. They describe wanting to walk the streets behind a green sheet of glass, which could imply feeling trapped or disconnected from reality. The chorus repeats the phrase "I'll be with you girl, like being low, hey hey hey like being stoned", suggesting a desire for a deep level of connection but also a sense of being lost or disoriented.

The second verse brings in imagery of nature, with poppies making the singer sleepy and a single rose standing out among them. The fruit rusting on the vine and calling from the trees could represent missed opportunities or unfulfilled potential. The bridge refers to a "displaced cosmonaut" and a "junkie cosmonaut", which could symbolize feeling disconnected from others or oneself. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus, emphasizing the desire for connection and the feeling of being lost.

Overall, the lyrics to "Low" paint a picture of someone struggling to navigate their feelings and desires, feeling trapped and disconnected at times but ultimately seeking connection.

I was down at the New Amsterdam
Staring at this yellow-haired girl
Mr. Jones strikes up a conversation
With a black-haired flamenco dancer
You know she dances while his father plays guitar
She's suddenly beautiful
And we all want something beautiful
Man, I wish I was beautiful
So come dance the silence down through the morning
Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la, yeah
Uh huh, yeah
Cut up, Maria
Show me some of them Spanish dances
Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones
Believe in me
Help me believe in anything
'Cause I wanna be someone who believes
Yeah
Mr. Jones and me
Tell each other fairy tales
And we stare at the beautiful women
She's looking at you
Ah, no, no, she's looking at me
Smilin' in the bright lights
Coming through in stereo
When everybody loves you
You can never be lonely
Well, I'm gon' paint my picture
Paint myself in blue and red and black and gray
All of the beautiful colors are very, very meaningful
Yeah, well, you know gray is my favorite color
I felt so symbolic yesterday
If I knew Picasso
I would buy myself a gray guitar and play
Mr. Jones and me
Looked into the future
Yeah, we stare at the beautiful women
She's looking at you
I don't think so
She's looking at me
Standing in the spotlight
I bought myself a gray guitar
When everybody loves me
I will never be lonely
I will never be lonely
Said I'm never gonna be lonely
I wanna be a lion
Yeah, everybody wanna pass as cats
We all wanna be big, big stars
Yeah, but we got different reasons for that
Believe in me
'Cause I don't believe in anything
And I wanna be someone to believe, to believe, to believe
Yeah
Mr. Jones and me
Stumbling through the barrio
Yeah, we stare at the beautiful women
She's perfect for you
Man, there's got to be somebody for me
I wanna be Bob Dylan
Mr. Jones wishes he was someone just a little more funky
When everybody loves you, ah son
That's just about as funky as you can be
Mr. Jones and me
Staring at the video
When I look at the television, I want to see me
Staring right back at me
We all wanna be big stars
But we don't know why, and we don't know how
But when everybody loves me
I'm wanna be just about as happy as I can be
Mr. Jones and me
We're gonna be big stars

The guy talks about this blonde girl he liked the look of... but he settled for the dark haired Latina girl because she was dancing sexy for him... after she showed some interest. "She's suddenly beautiful"

And when someone accepts you for who you are (the best person you will ever be) that makes you feel beautiful.. <3

the era in which we develop at the fastest rate is our teenage years... not just physically but also emotionally and most of all mentally.

He talks about wanting to be a lion but then just passing as a cat. Again it's accepting reality.

Life looks good during the period when you are developing. I'm not sure anybody can ever live up to their own expectations (no matter what success you think they have in their field)

He wants to paint that picture with lots of colours... but then when he looks at it it's just 50 shades of grey.
