Black Sabbath
Coven Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They journeyed far to Brocken Mountain pinnacle.
A gathering of dread, an awesome spectacle.
Each in his hand, a candle of black.
Their faces grave, a deathlike mask.

The prince assumed the person of the goat,
Reigning upon his throne distant and far remote.
The cauldrons boiled as the fires burned.
The deep'ning shadows, two figures turned.

Bubbling pots of ungents and potions,
Flames revealing the obscene motions.
Old hags murmur in evil ranting!
Voices grow louder and join in the chanting.

Infants' flesh they did offer
For the prince to devour.
Covens join, all combine,
Powers strong, thoughts align.

If witchcraft all the fools condemn,
It turns around and crushes them.
When good has been twisted,
When good has been killed,
Then love is resisted and blood will be spilled.

Accursed ye'll be!
From toes to eyes!

Accursed ye'll be!
Until ye dies!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Coven's song Black Sabbath detail a gathering of witches on Brocken Mountain, where they engage in diverse rituals in honor of the prince who has assumed the shape of a goat. The scene painted is horrific, as old hags stir cauldrons of ungents, and flames reveal obscene movements. Interestingly, the witches offered infants' flesh to the prince, which he devoured. The witches present at this gathering believe that when good is twisted or killed, love is resisted, and blood will be spilled. The song ends with the witches cursing non-witches, warning them that they will remain cursed until death.

Coven is definetly one of the strangest, and interesting bands of the late 60s. They were an oddity, and had interesting lyrics and music.They are not heavy metal per sey, but they influenced the look and attitude of proto metal and edgier music that was taking shape in the 70s. They blalantly worshiped Satan, and didn't care what peiple thought-which is also a punk thing.

@JTtheTalkingHead

Francois Palay I agreed with you until you said it was a punk thing. punk stands against all religion and political stands.

@MultiZaphod

Punk stands against you making declarations of what punk is and isn't.

@VeNeRiUs MuSa You're an idiot. Only modern Zionist propaganda Hollywood punk is all about being an edgy atheist. Old school punk was fairly conservative when it wasn't going mainstream. I used to think I was a liberal punk rocker because I listened to Bad Religion and Blink 182. That shit is gay. Real punk is about whatever is on your mind.

@VeNeRiUs MuSa True Satanism is Anti Religious!

@rainerkornmusic

@MultiZaphod Yep ,Right!

Coven was the first band to use the sign of the horns, inverted crosses and they even had a song called black sabbath. Even though they weren't technically metal people should give them more credit for their influence on the genre!

@pnduarte4696

Black Sabbath was the name of a movie (1963). First to use the Sign of horns were the Beatles. They did not influence anything because they were a underground band.

@lachessys

Well, doing something before somebody else does it doesn't mean you influenced them, chances are black sabbath had no idea this band even existed, specially if you take into account that the band had nothing to do with the imagery they took, they recorded the album and left, the record company did all the art and everything else and gave them the finished product, so black sabbath had nothing to do with all the "satanic" imagery that their first álbum had.

@On_Dust

That's right. Don't listen to them damn fools. Coven is not hard enough to be called metal. Even tho their lyrics and acts are more metal than everyone before them. At least before they turned it into a hippie psychedelic rock band. You can call them the first 'black psych' band 😄. But the fact that they were and underground band and they were no metal doesn't mean that black sabbath isn't a copy of that. To me black sabbath isn't nothing but a combination of 3 bands that already existed. They have the musical style of blue cheer, the attitude of mc5 and the dark aesthetic of coven.
