Riot
Covenant Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm waiting for the plane to crush and burn
I like the smell of burning kerosene
I'm feeding on the thrill of primal fear
I want my share of fluid endorphine
It seems they just sit and wait for sleep
I really need to see if there is something more
In danger I perceive my world so clear
I force myself to stretch the envelope
There's a party going on
We'll all be here dancing underground
There's a riot going on
We'll all be here dancing underground
There's a riot going on
There's a riot going on
We'll all be here
There's a riot going on
There's a riot going on
We'll all be here
There's a party going on
We'll all be here dancing underground
There's a riot going on
We'll all be here dancing underground
There's a party going on
We'll all be here dancing underground
There's a riot going on
We'll all be here dancing underground
I'm freezing to the bone on the arctic storms
Naked in the cold I'm feeling so alive
I'm searching for the last uncharted land
I hope to find someone else like me
Don't listen to the fools that hold you back
For you will achieve what they can only dream
Now escape the grip of good old common sense
And trust yourself for reaching further on
There's a party going on
We'll all be here dancing underground
There's a riot going on
We'll all be here dancing underground
There's a party going on
We'll all be here dancing underground

There's a riot going on
We'll all be here dancing underground

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Covenant's "Riot" are quite dark and filled with a sense of danger and adrenaline. The singer seems to be waiting for a deadly plane crash, even reveling in the idea of burning kerosene. The theme of fear continues as he talks about feeding on the "thrill of primal fear" and wanting to experience the rush of endorphins. In contrast to the waiting and fear, there is a sense of rebellion and underground celebration. The singer speaks of dancing and partying in the face of danger, asserting independence and making the most of the moment.

The contrast between danger and rebellion is further emphasized by the mentions of being "naked in the cold" and searching for uncharted lands. The lyrics suggest a desire to break free from the constraints of society and common sense and to push boundaries, even if it means taking risks. There's a sense of living in the moment, of not waiting for life to happen but taking control and experiencing it to the fullest.

This is a gemstone! A Covenant classic with fiery energy and rebellious spirit. Just brilliant.

not rebellious at all

Interpretation is always subjective, of course. Definitely rebellious for me personally. How do you come to your conclusion?

This is far right music. Rebellion is far left. I know many goth fans didn't get this, but their loss.

Thanks for your polite response, bye ;)

+ace tord I have no idea where you get that interpretation from. The band is unpolitical. Besides, anyone can rebel.
I don't see how this text is political at all.

I definitely don't think it was the intentions of the artists to make this a "far right" piece.

Also, saying goodbye before you even engage in discussion gives others the impression that you are unwilling or unable to have a good discussion.

It's the simple things in life I really enjoy. Like turning up the volume in time with the music at 0:11-0:14.

To erase any confusion about the political direction of Covenant, here's a short statement from Joakim Montelius:

"Our Riot is inspired by The Clash. Covenant is unpolitical except that we're strongly opposed to all forms of extremism, political as well as religious. Feel free to quote me on that."
