Whisper A Prayer For The Dying
Coverdale/Page Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I hear the sound of distant thunder, echo all around
I see the tragedy of young ones lying on the ground
I see the fathers´ sons and daughters, I hear the mothers crying
Nothing left for me to do, but, whisper a prayer for the dying

Oh, a prayer for the dying
The suffocating heat of jungles, and burning desert sands
Where everything reminds you, you´re a stranger in a strange land
The soothing words of politicians, those bodyguards of lies
While guardian angels waste their time and every mother cries

Oh, a prayer for the dying, dying, dying
Machine gun, battle cry, you pray to God when the bullets fly
The bombs fall like black rain, an' all your dreams take you home again
Nothing but bad dreams

You can´t read, you can´t write
You´re so scared, you can´t sleep at night
You try to carry the heavy load
Walking down Armageddon road

Oh, Armageddon road

I hear the sound of distant thunder, echo all around
I see the tragedy of young ones lying on the ground
I see the fathers´ sons and daughters, I hear the mothers crying
Nothing left for me to do, but, whisper a prayer for the dying

Oh, a prayer for the dying, dying
Oh, a prayer for the dying, baby, baby
Oh, a prayer for the dying, dying
Whisper a prayer for the dying

You can´t run, you can´t hide
You can´t show what you feel inside
You´re going crazy, going insane
You know you´ll never be the same again, no, no

Whisper a prayer for the dying, dying, dying, dying, dying, no, no

Armageddon road, Armageddon road
I´m walking down Armageddon road

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Coverdale/Page’s song “Whisper A Prayer For The Dying” depict the tragic reality of war, as told from the perspective of an observer. The opening lines describe the sound of gunfire and the heartbreaking scene of young soldiers lying dead on the ground. The choice to use the word “tragedy” suggests that these deaths are not an inevitable consequence of war, but rather an unnecessary and preventable loss of life. The following lines highlight the devastating impact of war on families - fathers, mothers, and children, all of whom are left grieving. The singer then concludes that there is nothing left to do but pray for the dying soldiers.

The lyrics in the second verse further emphasize the horrors of war, describing the suffocating heat of the jungle and the burning sands of the desert. The phrase “stranger in a strange land” refers to the disorientation and confusion soldiers feel when they are sent to unfamiliar territories to fight. The song also criticizes politicians who use “soothing words” to justify violence and wars, while “guardian angels” watch on helplessly as mothers continue to cry. The final verse of the song paints a picture of a soldier’s daily existence, where the fear of danger and the weight of responsibility takes a toll on one’s physical and mental health. The closing lines of the song lead back to the chorus, where the singer once again calls for a prayer for the dying, revealing that even in the midst of chaos, there is still room for hope and compassion.

Lyrics: Life is a waterfall
We're one in the river
And one again after the fall
Swimming through the void, we hear the word
We lose ourselves, but we find it all
'Cause we are the ones that want to play
Always want to go, but you never want to stay
And we are the ones that want to choose
Always want to play but you never want to lose
Aerials in the sky
When you lose small mind, you free your life
Life is a waterfall
We drink from the river
Then we turn around and put up our walls
Swimming through the void, we hear the word
We lose ourselves, but we find it all
'Cause we are the ones that want to play
Always want to go, but you never want to stay
And we are the ones that want to choose
Always want to play but you never want to lose
Oh
Aerials in the sky
When you lose small mind, you free your life
Aerials, so up high
When you free your eyes, eternal prize
Aerials in the sky
When you lose small mind, you free your life
Aerials, so up high
When you free your eyes, eternal prize
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh

@prespos

I was listening to this one in the streets of Paris, back in 1993.

This track, like several off this LP, is Led Zeppelin quality.

Strange thing, is that, here, in 2015, the lyrics seem even more relevant.

"You pray to God as the bullets fly."
That's physical: look up combat footage from Syria, etc.

Musically, Lyrically, this is very powerful song.

This one should have been a Led Zeppelin song.

Whisper a Prayer for the Living,
Prespos

Fantastic musicians. Fantastic band. This is the very best of DC and Jimmy Page. They really got the best from each other on this album. An absolute bloody tragedy that they never followed it up with another album. Superb stuff!!
