Cowboy Bebop [Yoko Kanno] Lyrics

Ever eaten crabtree?
Missing in the wanting
Any else comb tease?
Missing in the wanting

Chaka Khan, canine
Tell us, cold eel
Can you have an eye out?
Tell us, oh dear

Ever on a phone tree?
Missing since the fourteenth
Annie has cow cheese
Missing in the wanting

Shanghai, canine
Tell us, cold eel
Can you have an eye out?
Tell us, oh dear

On this, by this
Bend this, shin this
I don't intend to be so bold
B&B, if only I had money

E-X-U-P
E-X-U-P
E-X-U-P
E-X-U-P

Ever eaten crabtree?
Missing in the wanting
Any else comb tease?
Missing in the wanting

Chaka Khan, canine
Tell us, cold eel
Can you have an eye out?
Tell us, oh dear

On this, by this
Bend this, shin this
I don't intend to be so bold
B&B, if only I had money

E-X-U-P
E-X-U-P

On this, by this
Bend this, shin this
B&B, if only I had money

Ever eaten crabtree?
Missing in the wanting
Any else comb tease?
Missing in the wanting

Chaka Khan, canine
Tell us, cold eel
Can you have an eye out?
Lay out, oh dear

On this, by this
Bend this, shin this
B&B, if only I had money

E-X-U-P

E-X-U-P
Excuse me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Live in Baghdad" by Yoko Kanno, which was featured in the anime series Cowboy Bebop, are cryptic and hard to decipher. The lyrics seem to be a combination of nonsensical sentences and random phrases, but they create an eerie and haunting vibe that perfectly captures the show's tone. The repeated phrases of "missing in the wanting" add to the feeling of melancholy and longing.

The mention of Chaka Khan and a "cold eel" may be references to Japanese pop culture or simply added to create a surreal atmosphere. The line "On this, by this, bend this, shin this" may refer to different martial arts movements, which would fit with the show's aesthetic. The acronym "E-X-U-P" is repeated several times throughout the song, but its meaning is unclear.

In fairness to Kanno-san I'd call the Cowboy Bebop OSTs more a group effort than, say, those for Stand Alone Complex and Terror In Resonance. Same could be said for Escaflowne and Wolf's Rain. And that's by no means an exhaustive list. But I can this for only a precious few other composers: If it has Kanno-san's name on the label it's a lock.

VT: This music is actually pretty soothing. It's called "heavy metal", by the way
