KILLER
Cozy Powell and Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I got the recipe thumping on it
And as for rivalry well I own it
You can't speak for me
Doing all I can to survive

Don't ask for sympathy, beg to differ
(Don't ask for sympathy, beg to differ)
And as for symmetry I'm irregular
(And as for symmetry I'm irregular)
And maybe you (?) to me
(And maybe you (?)to me)
But I get it dead or alive
(But I get it dead or alive)

I'm your favorite enemy
I'm the leader of the pack
Got your heart, got your soul got your back

(Your soul)
Whoo
Killer, killer, killer
(Your soul)
Whoo
Killer, killer, killer
(Your soul)
Whoo
Killer, killer, killer

Get out the way if you can't stand the flack
Me and mom we're on a maximum attack

If this was fantasy I'd condone it
But you move so foglessly I'd atone for it
From under bleachers to the windmills of my mind

Seems you protest to much as of lately
(Seems you protest to much as of lately)
We're (?)you (?)and so straightly
(We're (?)you (?)and so straightly)
I'm the beseecher and you are just a matter of time
(I'm the beseecher and you are just a matter of time)

I'm your favorite enemy
I'm the leader of the pack
Got your heart, got your soul got your back

I'm your favorite enemy
I'm the leader of the pack
Got your heart, got your soul got your back

(Your soul)
Whoo
Killer, killer, killer
(Your soul)

Get out the way if you can't stand the flack
Me and mom we're on a maximum attack
You have got to face up to the fact this is undeniable

Overall Meaning

The song "Killer" by Cozy Powell and Band is an energetic and confident track that exudes a strong sense of self-belief and determination. The lyrics revolve around owning one's rivalries and not asking for sympathy, instead focusing on survival and getting what one wants "dead or alive." The chorus emphasizes being a favorite enemy and the leader of the pack, with the line "got your heart, got your soul, got your back" implying a sense of loyalty and support.

The second verse references fantasy and atonement, suggesting that the singer is aware of their flaws but is unapologetically themselves. The line "we're (?) you (?) and so straightly" is somewhat cryptic, but could perhaps be interpreted as asserting that the singer and their rival are very different from each other. The bridge shifts back to the chorus, declaring that the singer and their "mom" are on a maximum attack and urging anyone who can't handle it to "get out the way."

Overall, "Killer" is a confident and energetic song that encourages self-belief and owning one's rivalries. Its repeated refrain of "killer, killer, killer" reinforces the idea of being a force to be reckoned with and sets a powerful tone for the track.

I saw Cozy Powell on Halloween Night, 1986 at Pacific Amphitheatre , from these awesome seats we bought in the parking lot for $5 dollars above box office price thirty minutes before the show1 which was on a glorious Friday night . About 5,000 people were there, filling the orchestra section completely back to row X. Or Y.
But our seats were in Row H ( with three rows in the pit in front of the orchestra section, we were in the 11th Row in front of
Greg Lake.
The thing I remember most about Cozy, visually ,is that behind this huge drum kit he had, he really looked like a big ball of hair and flailing arms for much of the act. Like the Tasmanian Devil cartoons , a ball of hair with flailing arms and legs and lights and fog.. and huge chimes ... they were fucking awsome, and Cozy Powell wasn’t just some drummer with a “P” to fill Palmers legendary spot.
Cozy Powell was a one man show by himself that night ..they All were : Emerson, Lake, AND Powell, and I have been a fan ever since.
So sad he died in that horrid car crash! If he was still alive, he would be in his seventies, and I am sure he would still be playing shows here and there.
I’ll never forget him. He gave ELP a metal sort of vibe and the trio kicked three well targeted asses!
I rated the show a 10. So did my buddy, Mike, who was equally blown away by their show and huge high decibel-blasting, incredibly clear sound.
A Happy Halloween, it was!! And still IS in my memory .
Luckily I recorded most of the show that night. Hey, I ain’t stupid. I knew they’d be good. Just not AS awesome as they ended up
Being.
Rest in Peace, E.L. & Powell.
All of you! And Thanks for the great memories.

@James Ford With the way Pacific Amphitheatre
was set up for that show, it was ..I'm trying to remember the set up. I think the orchestra, which is maybe 23 rows. And i think there was a smallish 10 or15 row loge section, then the lawn, which, anyone who had lawn tix got to sit in available seats. It wasn't totally sold out, but the seats were pretty much filled up. Maybe about 6, 000 or 7,000 fans there.
We expected it to be like Asia, maybe. Sort of an ELP-lite, with them playing the entire new album
and maybe a few oldies. 80 or 90 minutes, tops. The album sounded terrific but was was so much different in, not so much style, but their Sound was unlike any previous ELPalmer album, so I just didn't expect them to do much ELP material. Palmer is an extremely fast and unique recognizable drummer who is all over the kit, while Powell is kind of like a motor, opting to layer his rhythms through strong armed poly-rhythms, utilizing feet and arm coordination for that robotic choo-Choo train-like pulse (what i would say adds a definite metal appeal).
In fact, the show was very much like a heavy metal concert, with a big stage filled with dark metalic sci-fi props..perfect for Halloween.
Man, I could go on and on. I am a bassist who has played and been to many shows in my day, and this one I rank the highest due to the expectations.
They surpassed those when they stepped foot on stage and began the "The Score". They were almost twice as loud as we expected. Their sound was super clean and super powerful, like metal, minus distortion. If the show ended after Pirates, we were blown away enough that we would have been mad it was only 3 songs, but would have considered it well worth every penny and then some.
I have seen bigger concert productions plenty of times, and some could be argued to have been actual "better" concerts, but we expected those to be excellent. We went into ELP expecting less than the huge ELP of old and we got something with more balls that we were not quite ready for.
They were so intense (row H just off to Greg Lakes left), we forgot we had brought a single joint along for the festivities and remembered it during Lucky Man. We smoked half of it. Then when the next song was a blistering rendition of FANFARE, it was almost a sensory overload. Then MARS was next.. Man!!! Lake was SO cool during that song, he almost looked like he was asleep, just planted there like a statue. Cozy did his solo during it. (listen to the one from Sprockets studio 1985. It's regular drums, not electric, and it's actually cooler)
I was 20 years old and 66 days and still remember it clearly afterwards...at 56 years and 115 days and counting.
Luckily I got to tell Greg Lake about the experience
20 plus years later. He said he remembered the Halloween show and thought it was a very good show. But he thought it sounded more like I was describing the October 30th show at the Greek, which he said "was absolutely splendid" and one of their truly best concerts with that short-lived lineup, so fondly remembered as ELPowell.
I wish I had went to BOTH shows!!!
Thanks for sharing the memory.
It's a good one for both of us. And your wife and friends, too.
