Ice
Crack the Sky Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When the summer night has changed its warmer breezes to the icy cold of silent winter freezes, will you be there?
When the flowers in the windows of the neighbors start to bow their frozen heads and to leave us, will I see you there?

Chorus:
Will you stand by me against the cold night,
Or are you afraid of the ice?
Afraid of the ice?
Ice.

When the waters of the roaring ocean bring a chilling feeling and the beach is closing, are you near me?
When the cloudy skies are blocking out the sun and suddenly your nose has begun to run, do you still hear me?

Repeat chorus

Will you stand by me against the cold
Will you stand by me against the cold

Will you stand by me against the cold
Ice

Overall Meaning

The song "Ice" by Crack the Sky describes a winter season when all is cold and lifeless, asking whether one's supposed partner will be present during such trying times. The lyrics use the metaphor of coldness to represent difficult or unpleasant experiences that life throws one's way. The first stanza suggests that the partner might disappear during tough times when things are not going well. It speaks of how the warm summer breeze turns into chilly winter frost, and how the flowers in the neighbour's windows die out and bow their heads, questioning whether the partner will still be there.

The chorus reiterates a significant concern - will the partner stand by during the cold nights, or will afraid of facing difficult times? It could mean, will they abandon the relationship when the going gets tough or will they loyally stay till the difficult times end? The second verse talks of how the sea might get incredibly rough, and the beach might close, suggesting an unsafe environment, and asking if the partner will be present during such ominous situations. It continues to use the imagery of winter to depict coldness and how it's a challenge as the cloudy skies block the sun, causing one's nose even to run, indicating that life can be harsh and testing.

Overall, the song focuses on finding support in the face of adversity, wondering if the partner will be there or afraid of the ice that life brings. The lyrics appear to be about a relationship question during tough times, with a desire for a supportive partner.

They were our Baltimore band in heavy rotation on DC 101. They were better than Queen in my opinion..yes I said it. Remember the "Greaseman"? Crack the Sky was not considered progressive then. Just part of the Baltimore rock mix.

Bill Hart

I bought this within a week or so of release as a 16- year-old in Rochester, NY because we were home to 1 of THE great music stores, “The House of Guitars” and a then great radio station, WCMF! One of the most inventive albums ever and it has never lost its edge. John Palumbo was a genius.
Crack on!

Rebellion Dogs

Tommy Thomas on WSAY would play CTS frequently

Linda Smith

I thought I was one of the only ones who remembered these guys. They were really underrated!

Dusty

They're still making music, apparently. They just released an album last year I think

Kay Bee

I saw them at Louie's Rock City in Alexandria, VA about 1980. 98 Rock (Baltimore) played these guys all of the time. One of my favorite bands back then. Today is 10/12/20 and I'm hear listening. Again.

@Baribrotzer True that. Saw 'em for my first time at the Baltimore Civic Center..'77ish..

Brent Gartside

Sad really..

Baribrotzer

The city of Baltimore has never forgotten them - they're considered a major Seventies band there, have a large following, and continue to sell out shows. I think they may also be big in Grand Rapids, MI, and a few other places.
