Who Am I
Crazy/Beautiful Soundtrack Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm a bicycle in a rapid transit world
I'm a carousel in a theme park
I'm a sea shell in a gift shop
And I am, I still am

I'm a coin in the Stone Age
I'm a stone in the Bronze Age
I'm a stamp in cyberspace
And I am, I still am
Yeah, I still am, haha

I'm a grain of sand melted into glass
I'm a bottle adrift at sea
Messages inside of me
Will never be, will never be
Will never be received

I don't belong, why is that so wrong
She don't belong, why is that so wrong
He don't belong, why is that so wrong
We don't belong, why is that so wrong

And I'm gone, and I'm gone
And I'm gone, so long

Overall Meaning

The song "Who Am I" from the Crazy/Beautiful soundtrack is a reflective piece about the nature of identity and the feelings of vulnerability and dependence that come with being in a close relationship with someone. The opening lines, "I am a child, I last a while, you can't conceive of the pleasure in my smile," convey a sense of innocence and joy, while also highlighting the idea that the singer is dependent on someone else for their happiness.

The chorus, "I gave to you, now you give to me, I'd like to know what you've learned, the sky is blue and so is the sea, What is the color when black is burned? What is the color?" serves as a moment of introspection and reflection on the singer's part. They are acknowledging the cyclical nature of relationships, where they have given to the other person and now they want something in return. They are also questioning the nature of reality and the things that we take for granted, such as color.

The final verse, "You are a man, you understand, you pick me up and you lay me down again, you make the rules, you say what's fair, It's lots of fun to have you there" highlights the power dynamic at play in the relationship between the two people. The man is in a position of authority and control, and the singer enjoys the feeling of being taken care of and protected.

Overall, "Who Am I" conveys a sense of vulnerability, dependence, and introspection. The song invites the listener to reflect on their own relationships and the ways in which we rely on other people for our own happiness.
