03. Passing The Time
Cream Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It is a cold winter,
Away is the songbird.
And gone is her traveller,
She waits at home.

The sun is on holiday,
No leaves on the trees.
The animals sleep
While cold North wind blows.

The snowflakes are falling,
The roof a white blanket.
There's ice on the window pane,
She waits alone.

She sits by the fireside,
The room is so warm.
Her children are sleeping,
She waits in their home.

Passing the time.
Passing the time.
Everything fine.
Passing the time, drinking red wine.
Passing the time, drinking red wine.
Passing the time, drinking red wine.
Passing the time, everything fine.
Passing the time, drinking red wine.
Passing the time, everything fine.
Passing the time, wine and time rhyme.
Passing the time.

It is a long winter,
Away is the summer.
She waits for her traveller
So far from home.

She sits by the fireside,
The room is so warm.

There's ice on the window,
She's lonely alone.

Overall Meaning

The song "Passing The Time" by Cream paints a picture of a cold and lonely winter's night. It begins with the absence of a songbird and her traveler, who has left her behind. The sun is not shining, leaves have fallen from the trees, and the animals are hibernating. The snow is falling heavily, and the rooftop and windowpanes are covered in frost. The woman in the song is waiting for her loved one to return, while her children are sleeping soundly beside her. She passes her time, trying to distract herself from the cold and loneliness, drinking red wine and keeping warm by the fire.

The lyrics of the song show a sense of desolation and solitude as the woman waits for her loved one to return home. Despite the warmth provided by the fireside and the company of her children, she still feels the chill of winter and the emptiness of being alone. The repetition of the phrase "Passing the time" not only acts as a reminder of her waiting but also portrays her attempt to distract herself in any way possible.

Overall, "Passing The Time" is a melancholic yet relatable song that encapsulates the feeling of being alone in the winter season while waiting for the presence of a missing loved one.

As you can see, for a moment there nothing mattered except the music. From what these guys have been through, their trials and tribulations, none of that mattered. For a few seconds in time things seemed to float, and then they brought us back to reality. The musicianship of Cream will never be topped, never.

Jack Bruce's voice is still amazing, fantastic combination with Eric which of course is one of the greatest singers of blues ever. Ginger on drums as usual impeccable.ย I'm a big fan of the Gibson bass. One of the greatest 3 piece bands ever.

Possibly

@wolfkarel the hofner wins by a thin margin imo, solely because it has a bridge pickup
