Rollin' And Tumblin'
Cream Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey

We were rollin' and tumblin'
Right the whole night long

We were rollin' and tumblin'
Right the whole night long

When I woke up this mornin' baby
All I had was gone

Well I rolled my baby
She's goin' to jump and shout

Well I rolled my baby
She's goin' to jump and shout

When that train rolls up boys
I'm gonna come walkin' on home

Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey

Engine driver blows that whistle
Fireman rings that bell

Engine driver blows that whistle
Fireman rings that bell

Well I didn't have time boys
To bid my baby farewell

Overall Meaning

The Cream's song "Rollin' And Tumblin'" is all about the ups and downs of love and life. The singer and his partner are out all night long, rolling and tumbling, which could either imply that they are dancing, or that they are riding a train. Either way, they are enjoying themselves despite the challenges that life has thrown their way. Sadly, when the singer wakes up the next day, he realizes that everything he had is now gone. Nevertheless, he is determined to keep going, and he decides to roll his baby out, to make her jump and shout. He knows that he will face hardships along the way, but he is ready to face them all. He is confident that when the train rolls in, he will find his way back to his baby.

The song features a number of powerful metaphors that help to convey the singer's message. For instance, the line "When that train rolls up boys, I'm gonna come walking on home" illustrates his determination to get back to his lover, even if it means travelling through rough terrain. The engine driver and fireman represent the challenges he must face, and the singing style of the song is bluesy, which reflects the struggles and challenges of life and love that the singer has faced.

First time I heard Cream I was stoned out of my mind on LSD lying of the floor between two very large speakers, for 8 hours. These guys are the best musicians England ever produced. All Rock music after this was just was just imitation.
