Those Were the Days
Cream Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When the city of Atlantis stood serene above the sea,
Long time before our time when the world was free,
Those were the days.

Golden cymbals flying on ocarina sounds,
Before wild Medusa's serpents gave birth to hell
Disguised as heaven.
Those were the days, yes they were, those were the days.
Those were their ways, miracles everywhere are they now?
They're gone.
Those were their ways, yes they were, those were their ways.
Those were the days, yes they were, those were the days.

Tie your painted shoes and dance, blue daylight in your hair,
Overhead a noiseless eagle fans a flame.
Wonder everywhere.

Those were the days, yes they were, those were the days.
Those were their ways, miracles everywhere are they now?
They're gone.

Those were their ways, yes they were, those were their ways.
Those were the days, yes they were, those were the days.

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of "Those Were The Days" are a reference to the lost city of Atlantis, which the Greeks and Romans believed was a utopian society that existed thousands of years ago but was destroyed by a catastrophic event. The song is set in a time "before our time," suggesting that this idyllic era was a distant memory even when the song was written. The lyrics describe an era when the world was "free," yet there were already hints of what was to come. The mention of Medusa's serpents, for example, suggests the lurking danger that was waiting to destroy this paradise.

The second verse of the song goes on to describe this idyllic era in more detail. The "golden cymbals" and "ocarina sounds" suggest a joyous, carefree atmosphere full of music and celebration. Yet even here, there was a sense of danger, as the heavenly surroundings were "disguised as heaven." The chorus sums up the theme of the song: "Those were the days...miracles everywhere, are they now? They're gone." The singer is lamenting the loss of this golden era, a time when the world was full of wonder and magic.

Overall, "Those Were The Days" is a wistful, nostalgic song that mourns the loss of a bygone era. The lyrics paint a picture of a world that was both idyllic and dangerous, a place full of both wonder and uncertainty. Cream's performance of the song, with its soaring vocals and lush instrumentation, captures the yearning and nostalgia of the lyrics perfectly.

Ginger Baker lays down a super human barrage of precision and virtuosity on this track, that is unmatched. Plays the drums as a lead instrument.

@AndyOakleaf

The tuned bells make it unique. Long live Ginger Baker. Those were the days.

@rubensjunior8586

I heard once that Felix Pappalardi played the bells in this track

@AndyOakleaf

@Rubens Júnior I looked him up on Wikipedia, poor guy got shot and killed by his wife in 1983. He was a bassist among other notable things, and he could have played the bells on this cut, talented guy that he was.
