See the old train go down the track
Hear the wheels go clicketty clack
It's comin' home, comin' home
Leavin' town baby, ain't comin' home no more
Get the train, you know why I'm leavin'
No use in greavin', well I'm leavin'
Well I'm leavin' town
Leave town, ain't comin' home no more
Traintime baby, traintime almost here
Traintime baby, traintime almost here
So give me one more time do dah yeh
Traintime baby
Traintime baby
Bye bye baby
Bye bye
Bye bye
Bye bye
Bye bye

Bye bye
Bye bye baby

Overall Meaning

The song Traintime by Cream is a blues rock classic that explores the theme of leaving behind a place, person or situation. The lyrics depict the journey of an old train travelling down the track with its distinctive clicketty clack sound. The singer is leaving town and is not coming back home. The urgency of his departure is emphasized by the repetition of the phrase Traintime baby, traintime almost here. The final goodbye is expressed with multiple bye byes in increasing intensity, conveying the pain and finality of leaving.

The song Traintime has been interpreted by many as a metaphor for a person’s journey in life. The train represents the journey towards one’s destiny or a new beginning. The clicketty clack of the wheels is symbolic of the passage of time and the inevitability of change. The singer is leaving behind something that was familiar and comfortable, but he is excited to move on to newer pastures.

Another interesting aspect of this song is its instrumentation. The song's use of the wah-wah pedal guitar effect has been described as a "psychedelic trip," and it helped to establish Cream's signature sound. Additionally, the pounding rhythm section made up of Ginger Baker on drums and Jack Bruce on bass, is electrifying and provides a strong contrast to Eric Clapton's lead guitar. The song showcases the band’s virtuosic musicianship while delivering a powerful, driving sound.

First time I heard Cream I was stoned out of my mind on LSD lying of the floor between two very large speakers, for 8 hours. These guys are the best musicians England ever produced. All Rock music after this was just was just imitation.
