White Room
Cream Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the white room with black curtains near the station
Black roof country, no gold pavements, tired starlings
Silver horses ran down moonbeams in your dark eyes
Dawnlight smiles on you leaving, my contentment

I'll wait in this place where the sun never shines
Wait in this place where the shadows run from themselves

You said no strings could secure you at the station
Platform ticket, restless diesels, goodbye windows
I walked into such a sad time at the station
As I walked out, felt my own need just beginning

I'll wait in the queue when the trains come back
Lie with you where the shadows run from themselves

At the party, she was kindness in the hard crowd
Consolation for the old wound now forgotten
Yellow tigers crouched in jungles in her dark eyes
She's just dressing, goodbye windows, tired starlings

I'll sleep in this place with the lonely crowd
Lie in the dark where the shadows run from themselves

Overall Meaning

Cream's song White Room is a poetic and enigmatic song that carries a surreal and dreamlike quality. The song paints a vivid picture of a white room with black curtains near a train station, in a country with no gold pavements and where starlings are tired. A woman with dark eyes and a smile that leaves contentment in the singer's heart is mentioned. However, the sense of sadness and loneliness permeates the lyrics, as the singer waits in this place where the sun never shines and the shadows run from themselves. He is bound to this place and will wait here until the train comes back.

The lyrics also tell the story of meeting a woman at a party who provides consolation for an old wound. She is like a yellow tiger crouched in the jungles with dark eyes that seem to hold secrets. However, the mood of the lyrics is still melancholic and disillusioned, and the singer is resigned to sleep in this place with the lonely crowd and in the dark where the shadows run from themselves.

First time I heard Cream I was stoned out of my mind on LSD lying of the floor between two very large speakers, for 8 hours. These guys are the best musicians England ever produced. All Rock music after this was just was just imitation.
