World of Pain
Cream Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Outside my window is a tree.
Outside my window is a tree.
There only for me.
And it stands in the gray of the city,
No time for pity for the tree or me.

There is a world of pain
In the falling rain
Around me.

Is there a reason for today?
Is there a reason for today?
Do you remember?
I can hear all the cries of the city,
No time for pity for a growing tree.

There is a world of pain
In the falling rain
Around me.

Outside my window is a tree.
Outside my window is a tree.
There only for me.
And it stands in the gray of the city,
No time for pity for the tree or me.

There is a world of pain

In the falling rain
Around me.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Cream's song "World of Pain" convey a sense of isolation and disillusionment with modern society. The repeated line, "Outside my window is a tree," suggests a lone tree, perhaps the only natural element in a world of concrete and steel. The singer notes that the tree is "there only for me," perhaps indicating that it represents a rare source of solace or refuge from the overwhelming urban environment.

However, the tree is also depicted as standing "in the gray of the city," suggesting that even this small oasis is not immune to the bleakness and despair of the surrounding environment. The singer laments the lack of empathy towards the tree and towards themselves, emphasizing the idea of crushing loneliness and emotional pain.

The phrase "world of pain" is repeated throughout the song, linking the singer's personal struggles to the larger social and political context of their time. The falling rain symbolizes this pain and despair, but it also suggests the possibility of growth and renewal - a theme that recurs throughout the song as the singer wonders if there is a reason for the suffering they experience.

Overall, "World of Pain" is a powerful commentary on the human condition and the challenges we face in navigating a complex, often hostile world.

First time I heard Cream I was stoned out of my mind on LSD lying of the floor between two very large speakers, for 8 hours. These guys are the best musicians England ever produced. All Rock music after this was just was just imitation.
