I love to read the comments. We recorded this record for Mercury Records in Chicago. I am now 88 years old and I'm still singing the song at public appearances I make. Why can't people just like the song? Both versions of the songs were outstanding, and unique in their own ways. It is saddening even the thought of racism comes to music even if they are blind to know that artists often asked other artists to sing their songs, which is why you have many songs by different people but all are the same at the same time.

Sounds like the crew cuts had one foot in the traditional jazz sound and one in the “modern” doo wop sound. The soft piano in the background calls back to the days of the smoky jazz club, while the tight harmonies are very 1950s. It’s always neat to see how musical acts bridged those divides when the direction of music was changing.

Growing up in the UK I only ever heard this version of Earth Angel , I didn’t even realise it was a cover! Listening to it now , this version has a real heavy Swing/Big Band influence , it sounds like it could be a much older song than it actually is.

Wow,... hearing this after the Penguins and Marvin Berry & the Starlighters versions, its just.... very different. The swing/shuffle component they added makes it feel completely different. I will forever be partial to the Penguins version myself, its the one I like to sing in the car... and the Marvin Berry one is immortal from it's Back To The Future fame... Frankly, until today I had never heard this cut... its a very different take on a black R&B song recorded by white kids for crossover radio play. Apparently, this was the most commercially successful version! (The Crew Cut's version)
Can you imagine a world where black and white artist's songs aren't played on the same station? Crazy that was just 65-70 years ago.

I personally like Crew Cuts version more than the Peguins although I do not dislike the Peguins version it is incredible as well each one has such a unique spin on it, it's like looking at two sides of a coin, they are the same thing but two unique and separate faces.

The Penguins did more of a '50s version. I picture a group of teens dancing with duck tail and crew cut haircuts. When I hear the Crew Cuts version I think of the 20s or 30s because it is a different style even though they both came out in the 1950s

Dear folks, this song is based on chord changes, as can be heard in the Richard Rodgers & Lorenzhart composition "Blue Moon". Both were whites, not blacks. I say this only because I hear again and again that whites stole the blacks of their music. That's nonsense! Leiber and Stoller were two white Jews who wrote songs for Amos Milburn, Little Esther Phillips, Bullmoose Jackson, Little Willie Littlefield, and Big Mama Thornton. Hound Dog is from Leiber and Stoller. Nobody has stolen from the blacks.

It's true what you say about covering Black artists work for White audiences in the States. However, it's also a fact that there were more locally recorded versions of songs and that local Canadian artists often covered songs that Americans had done, not just by black artists. For example, I still think of The End of the World as a Hazel McCurdy song, not a Skeeter Davis one.

Hey! Cut these Canadians some slack (it's hard enough for us to get ahead in "show business" LOL). My Dad had this version on his old 78s and I loved it. Sigh. I do think the "flip side" Sh-Boom was a better song for The Crew Cuts and showed their style and talent. The Penguins did Earth Angel with such beautiful agony in their voices that it is hard to compete.

cover records: keep in mind that this is the world of 1955...Unfair Jim Crow laws were in full force....But that's the way it was. Many good rock and roll songs were cut by R & B artists and were sold specifically to black audiences. R & B records were kept under the counter at record stores and had to be specifically asked for. Or, in bigger cities, R & B records were sectioned off in areas knows as "Race Music". Again, fair or unfair, that's the way it was in 1955. Savvy record producers who had an ear for great R & B music ran with cover versions for white performers specifically for white audiences. Many today blame the actual artists themselves for the covers, when in fact the artists were totally powerless as to what they were told to record by the record producers / companies. At this time, because of racial tension, R & B had to be introduced slowly to white listening audiences and cover versions like this one were the venue for that endeavor. To be quite honest, if these covers had not been made, we would have never later discovered the original authentic R & B versions. (Just saying.)

Very well stated. I am old enough (and white) and remember when my sister could bring home a Pat Boone record, but not Little Richard. In time that changed. Folks want to crap on Pat Boone, but he was actually a bridge. Oddly, a decade later the Beatles/British invation covered many old r&b songs and were given credit of "saving the careers" of a number of old blues musicians.

Ok, speaking for my taste. This one is just not as good as the original. I need more soul and emotion put into the vocals.This is why Selena was one of the greatest of all time, If the song was sad you'd want to cry with her. If it was a happy song you'd be smiling along with her.

Speaking for why so many people have an issue with this cover and not so many other covers I think is because this version, as were many other covers from the 50's race fueled cover era, was made specifically to sell to white racist that were too put off by colored people to want to buy their "race records" or to teenagers who's parents were racist and would not allow their teens to listen to "colored people" music.

I wonder if the crew cuts or any other really successful cover band from the 50s ever issued some sort of apology or statement for taking part in these race fueled cover versions of African-American originated songs? Even if it was their record labels pushing this and they had some degree or ignorance to the process I feel the should have at some point came out and apologized for taking part in that kind of organized race fueled scam.

I suppose it's not all bad tho because in the end the Originals were all eventually discovered. It's just disgusting that so many record labels screwed artist out of royalties for these covers.

It was a standard problem in the US in the early fifties. The record industry did not feel the (white) record buying public would accept a black band so they created white groups to ensure more commercial success. It was the public and the record industry that created this problem, not the artists themselves. But, yes, the original by the Penguins had more to it
