Black Coffee
Criss Sonny Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Put another nickel in, in the nickelodeon
All I want is having you and music, music, music!
I'd do anything for you, anything you'd want me to
All I want is kissing you and music, music, music!
Closer, my dear come closer
The nicest part of any melody
Is when you're dancing close to me
Put another nickel in, in the nickelodeon
All I want is loving you and music, music, music!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Criss Sonny's song Black Coffee are a love letter to the power of music in bringing people together. The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "all I want is having you and music, music, music," emphasizing the singer's belief that music is an essential component of a romantic relationship. The first verse begins with a request to "put another nickel in, in the nickelodeon," a reference to the old-fashioned machines that played music for a few cents. The singer then declares their willingness to "do anything for you," as long as they can continue to share their love of music.

The second verse adds another layer to the relationship between music and romance, as the singer urges their lover to "come closer" and revel in the intimacy of dancing together. They argue that "the nicest part of any melody" is the sensation of being physically close to another person. The chorus repeats, once again underscoring the importance of music in this relationship. The final line, "all I want is loving you and music, music, music!" reinforces the idea that music and love are inextricably linked.

Overall, Black Coffee is a tribute to the ways that music can enhance romantic relationships. The singer insists that their love for their partner is intimately connected to their shared love of music, and that they will do anything to preserve that connection.

The most "lyrical" altoist among the young guns after Charlie Parker's death. Like Sonny Stitt, Jackie McClean, Art Pepper, etc. But the way this Sonny exquisitely defined his playing is incredible. Left us much to young and much to soon. Great Prestige LP and thanks heaps for this upload. Cheers.

Yes. Developed stomach cancer & the pain was too much. Can't say as I blame him.

Love the tune by so many great artists, but Sonny Criss brings a tasty, very smooth blue/heartache groove, giving this melody a depth just not heard in other versions. This could be the background music of life. I can hear every emotional lump and bump, each small victory in living in the masterful laying down of each note by every musician on this track. The base player (Paul Chambers) is just where we need him to be, the keyboardist (Walter Davis) perfection, the drummer (Alan Dawson) like silk, and Sonny -- lord, lord, pure inspiration. Just don't see how it can get any better than this.
