She grew up far from the fado houses of Lisbon and nothing suggested that she was predestined for the fado. Like almost all young Portuguese born after the revolution of 1974, she was interested in folk music, jazz, blues, bossa nova but not in fado. She regarded it as a genre for a different generation. This lasted until her 18th birthday, when her grandfather gave her the album Rara e Inédita by Amália Rodrigues. Suddenly, Cristina Branco discovered all the emotions that the genre could offer in the close connections that arose among voice, poetry and music. The amateur singer - then studying communication sciences and still full of her ambition to become a journalist - began to develop her vocal technique and to take her new vocation seriously.
After that, Cristina studied the poems from which major fado lyrics are taken.
Since then, Cristina has worked on her fado repertory, accompanied by Custódio Castelo on guitar and as composer.
Halfway through the nineties, other young musicians also found a new means of expression in the fado and this contributed to a surprising renaissance. Just as they did, Cristina Branco began to make clear choices in which respect for the tradition went hand in hand with the desire for renewal.
There can be no doubt that Cristina Branco is developing her own style from a number of primary components. She employs a traditional group (voice, Portuguese guitar, guitar and bass guitar) and offers us concurrently a light, warm and experienced voice; she mixes the traditional fado with themes and folk songs that are personal favourites and seems always to choose the words of the best Portuguese, or even Dutch poets with discretion.
Não há só Tangos em Paris

Beijei teu retrato,
esborratou-se a tinta,
num corpo abstracto
que a saudade pinta...
E a esquadrinhar teus traços já dei por mim louca:
‘Diz-me lá, Picasso, onde ele tem a boca?’
Esse teu retrato
vou expô-lo em Paris,
já usado e gasto
ver se alguém me diz
onde é que te encontro,
se não te perdi...
Por te ter chorado
desfiz o meu rosto
e num triste fado
encontrei encosto.
Dei-me a outros braços mas nada que preste...
‘Diz-me lá, Picasso, que amor é este?’
Este meu retrato
vou expô-lo em Paris,
e assim ao teu lado
eu hei-de ser feliz.
Se nunca te encontro
nunca te perdi.
Sei...
não há só tangos em Paris,
e nos fados que vivi
só te encontro em estilhaços
Pois bem,
Tão certa, espero por ti.
Se com um beijo te desfiz,
com um beijo te refaço!
The lyrics to "Não há só Tangos em Paris" by Cristina Branco are full of emotive and poetic language that speaks about a longing for a lost love. The song contains two main parts where the singer, presumably a woman, talks about kissing a photograph of her love and the emotions she feels as she tries to find him. The first part of the song begins with her kissing the photograph of her love, but as she does so, the ink begins to smudge, and she is left with an abstract representation of him that only her memory can fill in. She becomes so entranced with the image that she calls out to Picasso, the famous painter, to ask him where the mouth of her love is located in the picture. In the second part of the song, the singer is still searching for her lost love. She has cried so much that her own face is unrecognizable, and she has given herself to other men, but she cannot find anyone that compares to him. She brings her own photograph to Paris, hoping to find him, but if she doesn't, she can at least find happiness with herself by reassembling her love's image with a kiss.
One interpretation of the lyrics is that they portray a sense of loss and a need to find oneself and love again. The singer is searching for her love in Paris, a city that is famous for its romance and beauty. She has tried to move on, but the memory of her love is always present, represented by the photograph she carries with her. The lyrics also suggest a sense of uncertainty and anxiety that come with searching for something or someone that might not be found. Despite all of this, the singer remains hopeful and determined to find love again.
