She grew up far from the fado houses of Lisbon and nothing suggested that she was predestined for the fado. Like almost all young Portuguese born after the revolution of 1974, she was interested in folk music, jazz, blues, bossa nova but not in fado. She regarded it as a genre for a different generation. This lasted until her 18th birthday, when her grandfather gave her the album Rara e Inédita by Amália Rodrigues. Suddenly, Cristina Branco discovered all the emotions that the genre could offer in the close connections that arose among voice, poetry and music. The amateur singer - then studying communication sciences and still full of her ambition to become a journalist - began to develop her vocal technique and to take her new vocation seriously.
After that, Cristina studied the poems from which major fado lyrics are taken.
Since then, Cristina has worked on her fado repertory, accompanied by Custódio Castelo on guitar and as composer.
Halfway through the nineties, other young musicians also found a new means of expression in the fado and this contributed to a surprising renaissance. Just as they did, Cristina Branco began to make clear choices in which respect for the tradition went hand in hand with the desire for renewal.
There can be no doubt that Cristina Branco is developing her own style from a number of primary components. She employs a traditional group (voice, Portuguese guitar, guitar and bass guitar) and offers us concurrently a light, warm and experienced voice; she mixes the traditional fado with themes and folk songs that are personal favourites and seems always to choose the words of the best Portuguese, or even Dutch poets with discretion.

O corpo, as mãos, o pensamento
E apago, secreta, uma a uma
As velas acesas do teu vento
The lyrics of Cristina Branco's song "Post-Scriptum" express a conflicting and tumultuous emotional state, where the singer is both angry and drawn to someone they are trying to distance themselves from. The singer speaks of pushing away the other person's presence in their mind, body, and spirit, and the symbolic act of extinguishing the metaphorical "candles of their wind". Despite this rejection, the singer feels the pull of their desire and longing for this person, encapsulated in their "addiction" to their eyes.

Afasto de ti, com raiva surda
I distance myself from you, with a silent anger
O corpo, as mãos, o pensamento
My body, my hands, my thoughts
E apago, secreta, uma a uma
And secretly, I extinguish one by one
As velas acesas do teu vento
The lit candles of your wind
Liberta, ponho o corpo em seu lugar
I free myself, put my body in its place
Visto a cidade, penteio um rio sedento
I dress the city, comb a thirsty river
I think I win and escape, but don't comprehend
Penso que durmo, mas não consigo tempo
I think I sleep, but can't find time
And emptiness takes over my belly
E segue-se a saudade em seu sustento
And longing follows in its support
And I confess my addiction to your eyes
De um verde tão lento, muito lento
Of a green so slow, very slow
If I think of leaving you, I already want you
Se pensas que recuso, já te anseio
If you think I reject you, I already desire you
If I think I hate you, I already wait for you
E torno a oferecer-te o que receio
And I offer you again what I fear
If I think I'm silent, I already scream at you
Se penso que me escondo, já me ofereço
If I think I hide, I already reveal myself
If I think I don't feel, it's because I lie
And I confess my addiction to your eyes
Se penso que me olhas, eu estremeço
If I think you look at me, I tremble

Fado is sadness turned into beauty. This is precisely what art exists for. A stern and flexible voice.

This a magnificent performance of singer Cristina Branco, age 41, with lyrics from a beautiful and deeply emotional poem, an original script of the great Portuguese writer Maria Teresa Mascarenhas Horta, and "Post Scriptum" says (eng):
Move away from you, with dull rage
The body, hands, thought
And delete, secret, one by one
The candles lit of your wind
I release, put my body in its place
dress the city, combing a thirsty river
I think gain and run away, and do not understand
I think i sleep, but i can not time
And gives up empty on my belly
And it follows the longing in their sustenance
And i say that my addiction of your eyes
A green so slow, very slow
If i think i leave you, i want you now
If i think refuse you, i yearning you
If i think i hate you, i expect you
And i about to offer you what i fear
If i think i shut up, I'll scream you now
If i think i hide, i now offer myself
If i think i do not feel, it's because i lie
If i think that you look at me, i already shudder
And i say that my addiction of your eyes
If i think you look at me, i shudder
