SUMMER
Croft Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

See the curtains hangin' in the window
In the evenin' on a Friday night
A little light a-shinin' through the window
Lets me know everything's alright

Summer breeze, makes me feel fine
Blowing through the jasmine in my mind
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine
Blowing through the jasmine in my mind

See the paper layin' on the sidewalk
A little music from the house next door
So I walked on up to the doorstep
Through the screen and across the floor

Summer breeze, makes me feel fine
Blowing through the jasmine in my mind
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine
Blowing through the jasmine in my mind

Sweet days of summer, the jasmine's in bloom
July is dressed up and playing her tune
And I come home from a hard day's work
And you're waiting there, not a care in the world

See the smile a-waitin' in the kitchen
Food cookin' and the plates for two
Feel the arms that reach out to hold me
In the evening when the day is through

Summer breeze, makes me feel fine
Blowing through the jasmine in my mind

Summer breeze, makes me feel fine
Blowing through the jasmine in my mind

Overall Meaning

Croft's song SUMMER evokes feelings of nostalgia and the simple joys of life during the warm season. The first stanza sets the scene of a Friday evening with curtains hanging in the window and a little light shining through, providing comfort and reassurance that all is well. The chorus then brings in the concept of a summer breeze blowing through the jasmine in the mind and making one feel fine. This is a metaphor for the refreshing and calming effect of summer, and how it can uplift one's mood.

The second verse describes the paper lying on the sidewalk and the sound of music coming from a nearby house, creating a peaceful atmosphere. Croft then walks up to the doorstep and enters the home, creating a sense of familiarity and homeliness. The chorus once again emphasizes the euphoric feeling of the summer breeze, and how it can improve one's mindset.

The bridge of the song focuses on the sweet days of summer and the blooming jasmine, setting a sensory scene of the sights and smells of the season. The singer then comes home from a hard day's work to be greeted by someone who cares for them, again emphasizing the comfort and joy that the season can bring. The final stanza brings in the image of a smile awaiting in the kitchen, with food cooking and plates for two. The embrace of arms and the sense of togetherness at the end of a day reinforces the idea that summer can bring people together in simple pleasures.

Overall, SUMMER is a song that celebrates the small moments and comforts of life during the summer season. It encourages the listener to let go of their worries and simply enjoy the beauty of the world around them.

One of my favorite songs. Was a kid in the 70’s. This song brings me great memories of summers at camp. No worries, no phones, no internet. Just play outside until mom shouted dinner time. Wish those days could come again. 😊
