In 1998, following the breakup of Archers of Loaf, Bachmann started work on a solo project that he named Crooked Fingers. The first outcome of this project, a self-titled release of various songs he had written, was released by WARM in 2000. It was followed shortly after by a second album on WARM, Bring on the Snakes. Reservoir Songs EP, a collection of covers of songs by artists such as Neil Diamond and Queen, was released on the Merge label in 2002. Red Devil Dawn followed in 2003, and Dignity and Shame in 2005.

The River
Crooked Fingers Lyrics

Where mister when you're young
They bring you up to do like your daddy done
Me and Mary we met in high school
When she was just seventeen
We'd drive out of this valley down to where the fields were green
We'd go down to the river
Oh down to the river we'd ride
Then I got Mary pregnant
And man that was all she wrote
And for my nineteenth birthday
I got a union card and a wedding coat
We went down to the courthouse
And the judge put it all to rest
No wedding day smiles, no walk down the aisle
No flowers no, wedding dress
That night we went down to the river
And into the river we'd dive
Oh down to the river we'd ride
I got a job working construction for the Johnstown Company
But lately there ain't been much work on account of the economy
Now all them things that seemed so important
Well mister they vanished right into the air
Now I just act like I don't remember
Mary acts like she don't care
But I remember us riding in my brother's car
Her body tanned and wet down at the reservoir
At night on them banks I'd lie awake
And pull her close just to feel each breath she'd take
Now those memories come back to haunt me
They haunt me like a curse
Is a dream a lie if it don't come true
Or is it something worse
That sends me down to the river
Though I know the river is dry
That sends me down to the river tonight
Down to the river
My baby and I
Oh down to the river we ride
Crooked Fingers's song "The River" tells the story of a young couple who grew up in a valley where it was expected for them to follow in their parent's footsteps. The singer, who is now older, reminisces about his youth and how he and Mary would skip town to find solace by the river. It was a simpler time, but one mistake changed everything, and Mary became pregnant. Before he knew it, he got a union card and a wedding coat for his 19th birthday, and they went to the courthouse where they were wed without any fanfare. He took on a job with the Johnstown Company in construction, but things took a turn for the worse with the economy, and he found himself jobless. The once-important things in his life started to disappear, and he and Mary became distant. However, he vividly remembers the good times they had down by the river, where he would hold her close to feel her breath, and now, he's haunted by those memories.
"The River" is a song that speaks to the larger themes of love, loss, youth, and regret. The man in the song is telling the story of his life, and he's looking back at his youth with nostalgia, wishing that he could go back and do it all over again. He's haunted by the memories of his past, and he wonders if a dream is a lie if it doesn't come true, or if it's something even worse. This song is about the choices we make, the people we love, and all the things in life that we can't control.
