Wasted On The Way
Crosby Stills & Nash Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Look around me, I can see my life before me
Running rings around the way it used to be
I am older now I have more than what I wanted
But I wish that I had started long before I did

And there's so much time to make up everywhere you turn
Time we have wasted on the way
So much water moving underneath the bridge
Let the water come and carry us away

Oh when you were young did you question all the answers
Did you envy all the dancers who had all the nerve?
Look round you know, you must go for what you wanted
Look at all my friends who did and got what they deserved

So much time to make up everywhere you turn
Time we have wasted on the way
So much water moving underneath the bridge
Let the water come and carry us away

So much love to make up everywhere you turn
Love we have wasted on the way
So much water moving underneath the bridge

Let the water come and carry us away
Let the water come and carry us away

Overall Meaning

The song Wasted on the Way by Crosby, Stills & Nash is a nostalgic and melancholic reflection on aging and the passage of time. The opening lines "Look around me, I can see my life before me, running rings around the way it used to be" echo the sentiment that as one grows older, they look back on their life and realize how much has changed. The lyrics convey a sense of longing and regret for wasted time and lost opportunities: "there's so much time to make up everywhere you turn, time we have wasted on the way."

The second verse addresses youthful apprehension and the importance of pursuing one's dreams. The lines "Oh when you were young did you question all the answers, did you envy all the dancers who had all the nerve? Look round you know, you must go for what you wanted, look at all my friends who did and got what they deserved" speak to the idea that many people in their youth may feel uncertain about which path to take, but it's important to have the courage to pursue aspirations in order to avoid later regret.

The chorus repeats the idea that there is still time to make up for lost chances and love that has been wasted, but the water moving underneath the bridge symbolizes the inevitability of time passing and the need to let go of what cannot be regained. The song ultimately conveys a sense of reconciliation with the past and a bittersweet appreciation for life's fleeting moments.

I'm only 16 but this song really resonates with me. I've wasted a whole lot of time hiding from the world, hiding from myself even. And these days I still do it, not as much, but it's a daily struggle. I'm sure this song will resonate with me even more when I'm older. So glad I found Crosby Stills and Nash and this song.

Nunya Business Don't worry to much about it. We all felt that way when we were your age. Just try to what's right and good and you will be fine.
It is a timeless song.

Graham Nash wrote this song after he cleared his body of drug use and he began seeing and thinking more clearly. To hear him tell the story of those years he (and the others) "wasted on the way" to their success can be a life lesson for us all, no matter how old we are. Today - tell someone you care about how much they mean to you, and plan for tomorrow knowing tomorrow is always better than today!

I might be wrong🤔but I'm sure this song was directed toward David crosby with the years he wasted gettin' 'wasted'
