In My Dreams
Crosby Stills Nash Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Look at those dancers gliding around
Seems as is their feet
Don't hardly touch the ground
Look at them smiling

Like they knew one another
And they never would come down
Turn around and hold me
I'd like to see your face alone

I'm hoping there's someone home
Instrumental (Ac. Guitar)
I'd like to meet you
Who do you see?

Introduce yourself to whichever of me is nearby
Close behind your eyes you're laughing at me
And I'm stuck with no instructions that I can see
To steer by

Stick around it's tricky ground
I'd like to see your face alone
I'm hoping there's someone home

Two or three people fading in and out
Like a radio station that I'm thinking about
But I can't hear

Who gets breakfast? Who gets the lunch?
Who gets to be the boss of this bunch?
Who will steer?

Turning
Turning
To see your face alone
I'm hoping there's someone home

Dream
Do you dream
Dreaming
Do you?

Dream
Do you dream
Dreaming
Do you?

In my dreams
I can see I can

I can see a love
That could be ...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Crosby, Stills and Nash's song In My Dreams, paints a picture of innocent love, finding that special someone who you feel would never bring you down. The opening verse describes the dancers, who glide around so effortlessly that their feet barely touch the ground, as if they are in perfect harmony with each other, never wanting to let go. The singer then turns to his partner and asks them to turn around and hold him to get a better look at their face alone as he's hoping to find someone home.

The second verse is more introspective as the singer is hoping to meet this person who has captured his heart, but finds it tricky ground, unable to decide which version of himself he needs to present to win them over. The singer believes that the person he has his sight on is a source of much laughter and joy, but he feels stuck without any instructions on how to proceed. The final verse leaves a sense of curiosity as the singer switches to asking the listener if they dream of love the way that he does. He ends with the lyrics "In my dreams, I can see, I can see a love/That could be..." leaving a sense of hope and wonder.
