Oh Catastrophe
Crown the Empire Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh sweet catastrophe
Now where have you been
I've searched for you so desperately
Inside of this pen
You're the answer I've needed
But the question I've feared
I know light is your mother
But darkness I fear
Sits inside of you silently
Just waiting to crawl
It's way back to the surface
Like an infected scar
I fear balance is over
The balance is gone
Please somebody save us
Please somebody come

Oh catastrophe
Leave me to fade out the light

And uncage the night

Overall Meaning

The song "Oh Catastrophe" by Crown the Empire begins with the singer addressing the concept of catastrophe as a personified entity. The singer seems to have been desperately searching for it, possibly for the chaos and excitement that come with it. The catastrophe is described as the answer to a question that the singer has been afraid to ask. The lyrics suggest that the catastrophe is a necessary force, but also one that carries darkness within it. This darkness is described as something that silently waits to crawl to the surface like an infected scar. The singer seems to have a fear that the balance between light and dark will be lost altogether.

The chorus of the song has the singer begging for someone to come and save them from the catastrophe that seems to be looming. They plead with someone to leave them to fade out the light and "uncage the night". This indicates a desire to let go of control and surrender to the chaos that comes with the night.

Overall, the song appears to be about the desire for chaos and excitement, but also the fear of losing control completely. The catastrophe is seen as a necessary force, but one that must be tempered and controlled.

"Girl- Do you ever wish you can chose who you fell in love with?
Boy- What do you mean?
Girl-Having control over it, being able to choose a soul mate
that’s more convenient for your side? Not having to lie or,
live with the burden of a forbidden love?
Boy-It doesn’t matter, Because even if i had to choose,
I’d still choose you.
Girl-I’m glad you still would of chosen me
Boy-I’m glad I didn’t get to choose, if I had chosen,
it would have been just anther thing I wanted,
But it’s not about what I want, it’s about what I need,
and what i need, is you.
Girl-I’m just so scared your gonna leave me.
Boy-I won’t, I’d rather die than leave you,
and nothings gonna keep us apart,
not even the end of the world."

I felt my heart rate begin... to...
Choke out the fucking noise like I was cursed
It felt like storms were directly overhead
And where I went it poured

And in a flash came the flood
That washed over my eyes
Now I could see inside the room of the blind
I lost myself inside
And as I fell into the black I left my past to die

Tonight we'll sail to the edge of the world
And watch the stars fall down
You'll put your head in my arms as we wonder
Is there anything we could have done

Why not try starting revolution,
And in the morning find a new sunrise?
Tonight we'll sail to the edge of the world
And watch the stars fall down

As our world ignites

What will we do? Will we sit back and watch
I'm sick of apathy dictating how I think and how I
Talk, I'd like to know as I lay down to die
I still control the way I think, before they make up my mind

As I gaze up towards the sky
I feel lost in the world of the blinding lights
We all hope to reach these heights
But we're all so afraid of the fall

No one will take the fall
We're all so comfortable with living in our sheltered holes
No one will take the fall
But if we try to we could all change the world

Tonight we'll sail to the edge of the world
And watch the stars fall down
You'll put your head in my arms as we wonder
Is there anything we could have done

Why not try starting revolution
And in the morning find a new sunrise
Tonight we'll sail to the edge of the world
And watch the stars fall down

As our world ignites

We are gathered here today as brothers and sisters not bound by fate, but by the understanding that our survival lies only in harmony.

We have only one life to live
And then we're cast in to the night,

Will you carry the torch and be the keeper of the light?

Or will you let darkness fall?
Or will you let darkness fall!?

Tonight we'll sail to the edge of the world
Tonight we'll sail to the edge of the world

Tonight we'll sail to the edge of the world
And watch the stars fall down
You'll put your head in my arms as we wonder
Is there anything
Is there

Actually we wrote the story for the music video basing it off of Romeo and Juliet! What's funny is we had no idea Twilight was coming out and that we would be releasing it the day before haha :)
