That doesn't make any sense. A, you can't work on something that's moving. B, I'm pretty sure that's Rule #1 in mechanical repair school: don't touch stuff that's moving. :)

Also, he'd probably be the only one who knew how to shut it down. So no one else could interfere in that.

I know a guy who lost an arm and apparently, the natural reaction in to use your other arm to get it out. Lost most of that other hand, too.

This just seems...well, dumb, to be blunt. If you're working on something that can kill you, there should be ONE shutoff key and that's the one you have on you.

I've heard of a bad one in Bacardi. A guy was told on his first day to go clean up broken glass in a machine. Yeah. No. Big place. Huge machines. Nobody stopped cases weighing tons from continuing to come down while he's in there.

I know people working as post office repairmen for 25 years. No injuries. You follow the obvious rules and nobody dies or gets hurt. Jmo

Was the electrician below the elevator but inside the elevator shaft, suspended in a safety harness, working on some wires inside the shaft, and then the elevator came down on him, grinding his body between the elevator and the inside of the shaft?

This legitimately looks like a scene out of a horror movie, of course it's absolutely tragic that someone lost their life, it can also be tragic that people literally witnessed said person's blood running down an elevator.

@TequilaMockingbird I think it probably was set up to look like an accident because a lot goes on on those ships between employees so anything is possible. Employees goes missing and are found dead much more than what they make public and the cruise still goes on like nothing happened. They put them in the morgue and deal with it later when the cruise is over. I used to think it would be a dream job but after talking to people that worked on cruise ships I think it's a pretty dangerous and shady place to work especially where you can't just leave.

Michael Jones my theory its either murder or accident. Since theres bound to be more than 1 electrician on the ship, so I assume that there was miscommunication between the electricians which lead to one of them turning the system back on allowing customers to use the lift.

He must've been working on the outside and someone pressed the button causing the elevator to crush him. It must've been horrifying, the poor man. They should've shut off the elevators so no one could use them while he was working, or had an escape door for him to use if it did, like on the roof so he can go inside.

Problem...If the elevator was going down then that blood would be at the bottom of the shaft and/or leaking onto other decks below it. That person was crushed by the elevator when it went up. No this is legit advice. When the government is unlikely to take significant action for justice, making a company pay can be the only way to make sure they don't continue to take safety lightly. I'm freaking out right now. I was on this exact same cruise ship a few months after this happened. I vividly remember seeing a blood stain on the carpet in front of the elevator and not thinking anything of it, thinking someone must of spilt their food or drink. That is sooo heartbreaking, just doing his job and he dies. I mean sorry others had to see that but the real story is and should be the man who died and the lived ones who are now coping with the loss. Focusing on the " poor" passengers who are " traumatized" by seeing blood is ridiculous.

The only way for this to happen is for the electrician to have been on the roof of the lift and was perhaps crushed as the lift went up to its ceiling. If the picture of the lift was the highest floor then that would be the story. The election probably doubled as lift maintenance and was probably inspecting the roof of the lift compartment. Then suddenly, someone used the lift, unaware that he was working on it. Sympathy for the poor man and seems like a nasty accident. Lifts on land have a “human gap” in case of such situations, yet I imagine lifts on ships don’t have the same criteria, due to economy of space.

Although gruesome and extremely unfortunate, I’m kinda glad that he recorded it. This is the type of thing that big companies might like to try to cover up. Just look at how Disney has all those rumors circulating about people/employees dying at the park. I’ve heard in some stories that they wanted to cover it up to save face

Went on this cruise a couple weeks ago and noticed that this same elevator broke down a lot and made lots of creaking noises, rocked a lot and it smelled metallic-like. The only elevator that had problems on the ship. Crazy to think I was on the same floor and same elevator at some points!

This is so terrible because it was so preventable. The elevator should’ve been off, with signs saying “out of order”. I hope he lived a good life and I hope that he didn’t suffer and it was more instant than it seems like it would have been. I cannot imagine how terrifying it would be to have that as your last memory. I hope his family is alright, that’s a devastating way to lose a loved one.

Chief electrician Jose Sandoval Opazo, 66, was doing routine maintenance atop an elevator stopped on the sixth floor of the Carnival Ecstasy on Dec. 27 when the elevator he was standing on started moving up toward the ninth floor, according to the report.

Opazo was killed when his body was compressed between the walls of the elevator shaft. Guests on the ship reported seeing large amounts of blood streaming down the front of the elevator doors on the eighth and seventh floors.

Not a problem if you follow safety procedures.He should have locked the elevator with the key then had that key on his person,so there would be no chance of anyone unlocking it while he was working,and there should have been a lockout tag inserted into the keyhole to make anyone trying to enter the elevator aware of the repair in progress. Those protocols are in place for a reason,and this cruise line is going to have to explain how and why they were circumvented.

I thought about it and he was standing on top of the elevator, it came from above and as it rose and approached the ceiling there was nothing he could do. Having your entire body crushed like this is so gut wrenchingly horrible to think about

I have read that the victim may have possibly disabled a safety device while working in the elevator. Either way, that is pretty messed up. I have been a social worker, a volunteer, and a paramedic and can tell you from experience that just because someone witnessed something like that does not mean they will eventually get over it. It could lead to PTSD for Matt and others who witnessed it. I hope they went to the counseling sessions.

the number of deaths i have stumbled across of staff members on cruise lines while not even seeking them out specifically is incredibly telling of how little the employers care for the people actually keeping the cruiseliner going and it is heartbreaking an disgusting. the cruise lines just sweep these things under the rug, they don't respond and they don't admit wrongdoing. and of course, they make a lot of money therefore never face consequences for their negligence.

I know what happened. There was a possible issue or possible check, and the elevator must have went up, while the electrician was on top. It went so high up, that he was crushed, causing the blood. RIP to that electrician, and I can understand that the moment was truly horrific.

So, it seems no lock out procedures were taken while maintenance was being performed. Very sad. So many companies claim to care about safety, but yet encourage shortcuts for whatever reason.

elevator deaths happen more than one would think. They really need to be redesigned and re-engineered to be safer. I know this isn’t the focus of the story.. but it is a result of it.

The more I think about this the angrier it makes me: the staff knew a man was repairing the elevator. Now the elevator is up and there's a stream of blood. Obviously something horrific has happened and there's no sense of urgency? A man is either dead or dying and you're not calling all personnel available to assess the situation? Granted it's safe to say the man is most likely dead and you don't want to cause panic, but it's treated as a minor inconvenience like he was disposable. They didn't even close up the floor, just put a curtain over it and some tape. Not to mention trying to say what happened was "oh an electrician got hurt". He did not get "hurt", he got fucking obliterated in your elevators and you took your sweet time, even letting people roam the floor and record. Zero regards for the deceased man.

The man who was inside and ran through the blood to exit the elevator essentially killed the electrician by using the elevator that was under maintenance. Extremely heartbreaking. Personally I don’t think the images and footage should have been made public simply out of respect for the family. It’s quite unethical. Some things should be handled In private especially with level of brutality In which he died. Very sad. Deepest condolences 💐

Boo freaking hoo. Your cruise was ruined by someone unrelated to you being killed. This man died a horiffic death serving you and now his family have to deal with not only that but the indignity of the evidence of his gruesome death being peddled off to the highest bidder by attention seeking money grabbers. I worked on cruise ships for several years, Ecstasy for 11 months in fact, but passengers like that make me glad I'm headed onto oil tankers now instead. Sincerest condolences to Jose's family and loved ones. Hopefully they will get some answers and the cruise line steps up and takes care of them.

+talesin- god of the internet If they are brazen enough and able to hang around long enough to get out the phone and record it despite another crew member telling them to move then they're perfectly fine. Any decent human being would have moved on, alerted the crew, moved other people on, turned around and blocked the free elevator doors from closing so it couldn't go back down to pick up more passengers and bring them up to that deck etc. etc etc. You get the picture. Hopefully their therapist sessions will help them create a conscience.

The man who “ran through the blood coming down” was probably the one who called for the elevator. Maybe he heard the man die and was in the elevator as I happened. How traumatic for everyone involved. I hope that poor man didn’t suffer long.
