So far away
Crusaders Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So far away
Doesn't anybody stay in one place any more?
It would be so fine to see your face at my door
And it doesn't help to know you're just time away
Long ago I reached for you and there you stood
Holding you again would only do me good
Oh how I wish I could but you're so far away
One more song about moving along the highway
I can't say much of anything that's new
But if I could only work this life out my way
I'd rather spend it being close to you

But you're so far away
Doesn't anybody stay in one place any more?
It would be so fine to see your face at my door
And it doesn't help to know you're so far away
So far away, yeah, you're so far away

Traveling around sure gets me down and lonely
Nothing else to do but close my mind
And I sure hope the road don't get to own me
There's so many dreams that I've yet to find

But you're so far away
Doesn't anybody stay in one place any more?
It would be so fine to see your face at my door

And it doesn't help to know you're so far away
So far away, yeah, you're so far away

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Crusaders' "So Far Away" are about the feeling of distance and separation from someone that the singer cares deeply about. The song begins by questioning why people don't stay in one place anymore, and expressing a desire to see the person's face at their door. The singer acknowledges that the knowledge that the person is only a certain amount of time away doesn't alleviate the pain of their physical absence.

The second verse continues with the theme of distance, but takes on a more somber tone. The singer expresses frustration that they can't seem to make their life work the way they want it to, specifically in terms of being close to the person they miss. The bridge continues with the feeling of loneliness that comes from being on the road and traveling, with the lyrics painting a picture of the singer feeling isolated and desperate to find something more fulfilling.

Overall, "So Far Away" is a heartfelt exploration of the loneliness and longing that comes from being separated from someone you love. The Crusaders convey their emotions through a beautiful combination of bluesy instrumentals and poignant lyrics that speak to the human experience of missing someone deeply.

The absolute best instrumental ever recoded in my eyes. I was introduced to the Crusaders by my father back in the early 70's. This classic from 1972 is my "go-to" whenever a musical groove is needed to calm the chaos of life. Reminds my of my dad every time I hear it. RIH daddy and thank you for introducing me to jazz, and specifically the Crusaders.
