In early 2001 CFS recorded their first EP - 'Through the Precious Words' in the famous Battery Studios, London with producer and friend Mark Williams. The three track EP was well received and proved a useful tool in promoting the band in their early days.
The partnership with Mark continued as CFS recorded a further two track demo in 2001 / 02. The song 'Even A Stopped Clock Tells The Right Time Twice A Day' was originally recorded to feature on a compilation CD for hardcore label Blackfish. This unfortunately never happened, as in late 2001 CFS split from original singer Craig Bailey. However the band used the vocal-less recording to audition potential new vocalists, and two months later CFS appointed Adam Pettit to front the band. Making a fresh start the band put down the vocals to '...Stopped Clock' and recorded another song - 'An End In Question', which also featured on a Visible Noise compilation CD promoting the London all-ages club Subverse. Other bands featured on this CD included Funeral for a Friend, Eden Maine and Aconite Thrill.
The two track demo proved very popular with those who managed to get a copy, and aroused much interest in the band. Off the back of this demo CFS secured tours with The Hope Conspiracy, Boy's Night Out, and From Autumn to Ashes, as well as shows with the Distillers, Funeral for a Friend, Strung Out, The Haunted, and many more.
In the summer 2003 CFS returned to the studio with Mark Williams, this time to record the five track EP "The Longest Day". Originally there were no
plans for an official release of the EP - it was recorded with the intent to promote the current sound of the band and hopefully attract industry attention. It did, and soon after CFS found themselves with new management, and "The Longest Day EP" was finally released through Mighty Atom Records in October 2004.
After 3 years of relentless touring and recording, Cry For Silence's debut full length 'The Glorious Dead' was released in late 2007 to great appreciation from fans and critics alike. The album saw the band dropping the screamo/post-hardcore tag they had gained from previous releases and exploring a much heavier (thanks in no small part to the use of an 8-string guitar) and progressive metal sound.
On July 28th the band issued the following statement via their MySpace:
"Cry For Silence have decided to split up. The decision has been a hard one for all of us. In the past eight years we've had experiences we could only have dreamed of and met so many incredible people along the way who we'll never forget.
Basically, we felt our drive to carry on as a band had dwindled too much to move to the next chapter of the story. Writing a new album's worth of material and touring it had quickly changed from an thrilling prospect to a daunting one. Anyone in a band will know that it just won't work half-arsed.
For this reason, we've called it a day now before we made it all a lot worse for ourselves. It is a difficult situation that nobody outside of CFS could ever understand. It's not about wanting fame, success or money - this band has never been about that.
We've had a good innings - most bands don't last half the time we've stuck together, it's just time to say goodbye.
So a sincere thank you goes out to everyone who's ever been involved - the fans who have been with us since the beginning, people who had enough faith in us to work with us and put us on the road and most of all our friends and family who have given us nothing but support.
Some of us will be moving on to other musical projects which you'll no doubt hear about in the near future, so stay in touch.
