Carnival
Cry Of Love Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Rocking horse has turned to dust,
Ashes on the line.
Ship of dreams has turned to rust,
Happens every time.

Sewer turns to gold,
Same old talk, seems old.
I need a drink to keep my fever down.
When the moon comes out shine,
Spare the rod and pour some wine.
Just keep on keepin on.
I'll be hear when the carnival is gone.

Lets go back to yesterday,
If only for a song.
Brother come on out and play,
You can still sing along.

Sewer turns to gold
Same old talk, seems old.
I roll the painted lady
When I'm down.
When the moon comes out shine,
Hold the force and pour some wine.
Just keep on Keepin on
I'll be here for the carnival.

One of these days you'll see the sound.
Riding back 10 feet off the ground.
Wanna stay lost until I'm found.
Just keep on keepin on.
I'll be hear when the carnival is gone.

Sewer turns to gold
Same old talk, seems old.
I need another drink before I drown.
When the moon comes out shine,
Spare the rod and pour some wine.

Just keep on keepin' on
I'll be hear when the carnival is gone.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Carnival" suggest a feeling of disillusionment with the promises of life. The rocking horse has turned to dust, which can be interpreted as a metaphor for the loss of childhood innocence and wonder. The ship of dreams has turned to rust, suggesting that even our greatest ambitions can ultimately disappoint. The singer seems to be searching for a way to cope with this disappointment, stating that they need a drink to keep their fever down. They also express a desire to return to happier times, to "go back to yesterday," even if only for a song.

The repeated line "sewer turns to gold, same old talk, seems old" suggests a suspicion of empty promises and superficiality. Despite these feelings, the singer acknowledges the need to keep going, to "just keep on keepin' on." They express a sense of determination to survive the hardships of life, to still be there when the carnival is gone. The carnival can be interpreted as a metaphor for the fleeting pleasures and distractions of life, which ultimately come to an end.

I spent 10 years in the army...THIS was my "go to" album when I was depressed, happy, drunk, sad, with a lot of friends, or by myself for days on end. It is the PERFECT album.....I can only name 5 such GREAT albums, and this is one of them...I feel fortunate that I got to see this unreal band back in 1993-94....in Columbus, Georgia at the ROAD HOUSE. I still tell the stories of how AMAZING this band was to my children, and reminiscence, with my long time Army buddies about the great time we had at the CRY OF LOVE concert... Mind blowing lyrics and arrangements....I wish I could be so talented with my band, Threaded Stone.

Not a bad song on the whole album. Hell, there ain't even an "ok" song on this album. Pure fucking magic. Front to back. Sure hate that Kelly had so many demons to fight. RIP, brother. Thanks for this music. It's part of the soundtrack to my life.
