Crystal Bowersox Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here come old flattop he come grooving up slowly
He got joo-joo eyeball he one holy roller
He got hair down to his knee
Got to be a joker he just do what he please

He wear no shoeshine he got toe-jam football
He got monkey finger he shoot coca-cola
He say "I know you, you know me"
One thing I can tell you is you got to be free
Come together right now over me

He bag production he got walrus gumboot
He got Ono sideboard he one spinal cracker
He got feet down below his knee
Hold you in his armchair you can feel his disease
Come together right now over me

He roller-coaster he got early warning
He got muddy water he one mojo filter
He say "One and one and one is three"

Got to be good-looking 'cause he's so hard to see
Come together right now over me

Overall Meaning

In Crystal Bowersox's song "Come Together," she covers the legendary Beatles song from their 1969 album, Abbey Road. The song is a call for unity and coming together. It starts with the description of a character named "flattop" who comes grooving up slowly with his long hair, joo-joo eyeball, and monkey finger. He says, "I know you, you know me, one thing I can tell you is you got to be free. Come together right now over me." The song's theme is about coming together and uniting despite our differences, and we all have to be free to love and live. The sense of the song is to be free from all social, political, or personal conflicts to come together and enjoy life together.

The lyrics of Bowersox's adaptation of the Beatles' "Come Together" are an open call to everyone, to join in to build a more united and stronger community. However, the lyrics carry a deeper meaning. Just as "flattop" has "joo-joo eyeball," "monkey finger" and a "spinal cracker," we, too, have our peculiarities that can make it hard for us to come together. Whether it is because of our race, gender, religion, or any other differences, we need to learn to embrace and celebrate them. That way, we can build a world where everyone feels welcome and safe. Therefore, it is imperative that we come together despite our differences and celebrate one another's unique qualities.
