The Dazzled
Crystal Stilts Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Clock towers toll and I am frozen every instant
Backward I brood and forward I dream for figments of existence
It can't be saved. It's already lost, it thrives on my resistance
We are bound and marching to an ever static distance
The lyrics of Crystal Stilts's song "The Dazzled" express a sense of existential crisis and a feeling of being stuck in a rut. The singer sits in a window, observing the passing of time from a distance and feeling frozen in the present moment. The clock towers toll, emphasizing the relentlessness of time, and the singer is caught between brooding on the past and dreaming of a future that seems unattainable. The phrase "figments of existence" suggests a sense of disillusionment with reality, as if the singer's hopes and aspirations are mere illusions. Despite this, the singer resists the inevitable march of time, perhaps holding on to the flicker of hope that things might change.
The final line of the first verse, "It can't be saved. It's already lost, it thrives on my resistance," suggests a fatalistic attitude towards the present moment. The idea that the present is "already lost" implies that there is nothing the singer can do to salvage it, and that their resistance to the passage of time is only feeding the inevitable. The second verse adds to this sense of ennui, with the lines "We are bound and marching to an ever static distance" invoking a sense of being trapped in a predetermined path, moving inexorably towards an unknown destination.
Overall, the lyrics of "The Dazzled" capture a sense of anxiety and uncertainty about the passing of time, and a feeling of powerlessness in the face of an uncertain future. The imagery of clocks and brooding/dreaming adds to the dreamlike quality of the song, which is underscored by the hypnotic guitar riff and echoing vocals.
