La casita
Cuco Sanchez Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

¿Qué de donde amigo vengo?
De una casita que tengo
Más abajo del trigal

De una casita chiquita
Para una mujer bonita
Que me quiera acompañar
Tiene en el frente unas parras
Donde cantan las cigarras
Y se hace polvito el sol

Un portal allá en el frente
En el jardín una fuente
Y en la fuente un caracol

Hiedras las tiene cubiertas
Y un jazmín allá en la huerta
Que las bardas ya cubrió

Y en el portal una hamaca
En el corral una vaca
Y adentro, mi perro y yo

Bajo un ramo que la tupe
La virgen de Guadalupe
Está en la sala al entrar

Ella me cuida si duermo
Me vela si estoy enfermo
Y me ayuda a cosechar

Más adentro esta la cama
Muy olorosa retama
Limpiecita como usted

Tengo también un armario
Un espejo y un canario
Que en la feria me merqué

Pues con todo y que es bonita
Que es muy chula mi casita
Siento al verla, no sé que

Me he metido en la cabeza
Que hay ahí mucha tristeza
Creo que porque falta usted

Me hace falta allí una cosa
Muy chiquita y muy graciosa
Más o menos como a usted
Pa' que le cante al canario
Eche ropa en el armario
Y aprenda lo que yo sé

Si usted quiere la combido
Pa' que visite ese nido
Que allá abajo del trigal
Le hecho la silla al lucero
Y nos llevará ligero
Hasta el medio del corral

Y si la noche nos coje
Y hay tormenta que nos moje
Tenga usted confianza en Dios
Que en casa chica y extraña

No nos faltará una maña
Pa' vivir ahí los dos

Overall Meaning

The song La Casita, by Cuco Sánchez, describes a small cottage situated near a wheat field. The song’s protagonist states that he has a cozy little house that he built for a beautiful woman who might one day accompany him. The cottage has vines and ivy growing on it, and a jasmine plant that covers the walls around the yard. In front of the house, there’s a veranda with a hammock, a fountain in the garden with a snail, and some vines where cicadas sing during sunny days.

The man tells us that his house is not complete; he feels like something is missing. He says that he thinks this might be due to the fact that the woman he built the house for is not yet with him. He wishes she was there, so she could share the experience of taking care of a cow in the corral, sleeping in the fragrant bed of broom flowers, and owning a bird that he bought at a fair. The man invites the woman to visit him in his little cottage below the wheat field and promises to keep her safe, even during the toughest of storms.
