Demoting Jeffrey from preacher to Sunday School teacher was a mistake. Small group teachers have WAY more influence over the people in their groups than preachers do. I've preached and taught in both capacities and I've always told people that teachers are more important to the Church than preachers are and that we should be far more cautious about who we let teach. Sadly people tend to just see the preachers as the big show and don't pay enough attention to who is teaching in the classrooms. (Background: Protestant Christian)

First, I would like to complement your comment and also the background to give me a better idea of your perspective. Second, portuguese is my first language so my english can be very superficial with a bad grammar😂. I'm a lds member since birth and my life experience is from brazil.
So, about the change in calling is something very common and expected. Members can have callings in presidence of the organization (women's society, for example) and then becoming an auxiliar in Nursery (for children between 18months old to 3yrs old). So is not something about "more influence" or more value" attached. Many bishops latter in life serve in other callings.
In my personal experience growing up in the Church, teachers can and are very important for how the youth sees the Church's doctrines. But also the bishop have the keys to interview, console, and deciding measure to apprehension of the member. I can see hoe both callings can be used to corrupt and wrongfully treat a member in a vulnerable state. In the opposite side, I experienced different times how teachers helped me better and when bishops were the ones I could rely my trust on what's is correct and doctrine and what was bias and distorted personal ideas to the doctrine.
Anyway, I hope I could contribute for more context about the callings. I have no intention to desagree. Your point of being cautious on calling teachers is valid and I personally agree by my own experience. I wouldn't trust or give my support if some members at my local church were call for sunday school for youth.
Another background information: before the calling gets fulfilled, the congregation are asked to give support rising the right hand. After they ask if there's someone who oppose also rise the right hand. If is noted opposition, the motives are investigated.

Personally, I like hearing about the backgrounds of these monsters, what the heck made them so evil? And why are seemingly sane people attracted to and then get sucked in to a cult, an evil heinous cult, with a leader who is pure monster? How he treated his wife is just, I can't even...Her self esteem must've been so low that she saw herself as something to be ..pooped on. This story has me crying for those poor little kids who didn't ask for any of this stuff. Superbly told, Sommer...your kind demeanor and soft, pleasant voice makes these stories a bit easier to listen to. Keep up the great storytelling.

Some religions lend themselves to cult-ish offshoots and LDS is one of them. When you have a belief that a person (usually male) can become a prophet, it opens the door for someone to make that claim and amass followers. Gaining this type of power often leads to corruption and abuse.

I just happened upon this video and I’m so glad I did. I live in Mentor Ohio, only about a fifteen minute drive from Kirtland. I was just a kid when this happened but I remember thinking how could something like this happen in my own backyard! I remember driving passed that house and barn (before it was destroyed) and how scary it was. I never really knew the whole story so I’m looking so forward to watching!

I have lived in Independence nearly my whole life, one of my grandmothers was RLDS, and this is the first time I’ve ever understood why the church’s annual convention thing was held here in their enormous auditorium.
Love the background stuff, it’s always helpful in understanding the individuals, and, as it turns out, can be informative outside the primary story.

I once lived in Utah, and being there made me really fascinated by Mormon history, so I read a lot of material on the history of Joseph Smith, Brigham Young and the overall history of the LDS faith and its people. And what I learned from all my reading is that (depending on which LDS-based sect you hear it from) Jesus is supposedly coming back to one of the following: Illinois, Missouri, Idaho, Southern Utah, Northern Arizona, Ohio, Israel or possibly upstate New York. Whew!

The most shocking thing I learned about this case today is when you said that during jeffreys trial they allowed him to give a "sermon" and ramble on for FIVE HOURS ??!?! Like who was the judge who told everyone they would break for lunch and then come back and say okay go ahead mr lundgren pls continue... like this cretin got away with literally whatever he wanted to do his entre life and people listened patiently and supported him, like not only was he allowed to manifest so much evil it was literally encouraged right up to and including the trial like my mind is blown. sommer you did an amazing job as usual, thanks for sharing

I remember this case; it was horrifying. Remind you of anyone currently facing charges for multiple murders?
Not much has changed, and the LDS continue to periodically produce these monsters. But, as I always say, consider the source or origin, and as the leader goes so go those under them. This is especially true of cults.

I boarded my horse across the street from this murder scene at the time this happened. I remember it well. I was a young woman who would ride alone at night in the area and it freaked me out knowing what happened right across the street. So very sad. Kirtland is a beautiful little town.

As someone who was forced into the Mormon church as a teenager, I go into stories about radical LDS sects (and regular Mormons, most of the time) just expecting to have to hear about CA. I'm sure there's some good people in the church, I just never met them.

I live in this area and was in my 20's when this happened. It was devastating because we don't have crime like that here. I haven't watched the whole video but by some of the comments the seems to be a lot of sympathy for Alice so maybe it wasn't told that while these murders were happening she left her son with his monster father and was driving around and didn't go to the police. Her son who was terrified of his father was only 17 and now has spent his whole life in prison (is still in prison) because she didn't help him and he was too afraid to go against his father. I think prosecuting that kid was a horrible injustice and I lost respect for Steve LaTourette for that. So I have little sympathy for all the adults in this situation but an enormous amount of it for Damon.

I'd always heard that about the Reagans too - that they were madly in love with each other their entire marriage but didn't really share that with their kids. Like there just wasn't enough love leftover for them. It's such an odd concept to me, but I guess in those times, especially, married couples had kids whether they truly wanted them or not (or maybe never even questioned it at all). I was childhood friends with the Avery daughters and when they moved to Ohio my family visited them there. Their house in Ohio was so much nicer than back in Missouri that I really hoped they had found a better situation. Their deaths were such a shock.

Call me crazy but years ago i had the same experience as Alice except my eyes opened & i could only see thick blackish roiling smoke like substance. I didn't consider it a religious experience; i've never felt such terror. A week later my son was sleeping in the same room & had the same terrifying experience. He didn't know what had happened to me the week before.until after. We both felt the presence of evil.

3:40- there's no way that he was diagnosed with MS the next day. MS is a only diagnosed by ruling out a series of several other disorders. It usually takes the better part of a year, and it would be nearly impossible to go from symptom onset to diagnosis in less than a week.

Every instance of sleep paralysis I've experienced was accompanied by a dark, evil presence and it only stopped when I started to pray to Christ Jesus. Five or six times that's happened. There can easily be a spiritual explanation for things we've labeled with our limited human understanding and terminology.

Sadly, when you are raised in a cult like these people were, they can easily fall prey to other cults! What a horrific story, and how ANYONE could let a man like that preach at their so called “church,” is behind me. He was evil the whole time!

I really understand how people get sucked into cults. They're searching, most have had minimal training in scripture, a minipulateing person can take advantage easily. These people would never pray upon someone like me, or my children. We would see through their sophistry, and self serving manipulation immediately. I have seen it happen many times in my own life, and have taught my children to recognize it. I have rescued family members from this very thing in the past. Unfortunately a person very close to me is using these tactics to minipulate a real church for her own selfish ends. Much in the same way this Jeffrey was manipulateing the Mormans in his church. These people exist at all levels some are more successful than others. Beware of the self-righteous, false prophets that know the scripture by heart.

My high school graduation was held at the RLDS church in independence. The spiral is cool to look at but it was weird being inside the church. But alas it was the only place that could house all of us

Missouri is a mixed bag of conflicted elements apparently, one day we spawn a Samuel Clemens, or a Brad Pitt or Walter Cronkite. Every once in a while we spit out one of these guys though 🤢

What a cruel and evil bunch of people! The wife knew this was going on and didn't report it? She is no victim here she enabled this maniac for years! This is one of the saddest stories I've ever heard!! It's hard to even listen to!! I just yuck!!!!!

what you describe happening to Alice is abuse, and i know how difficult it is to leave an abuser, but because there are helpless kids in the mix, I think we need to acknowledge that Alice has some responsibility here. She didn't just stay in those horrible conditions, in doing so she gave her children no other option that to live in this as well.

Well, this was a shocker. I had seen other depictions of this story on various network crime shows, but I don't remember any mention of the RLDS connection before now. My husband was raised RLDS, and was actually born in Independence! He was a faithful member of the church until he finished his first two years of college (at an RLDS college in the Midwest) when he finally got disenchanted. He sought out several different religions until now he's finally settled on just being a good human with no particular affiliation, although at one point he was seriously studying to become an Episcopal priest. It just stuns me that such an evil man as Jeffrey Lundgren could have arisen out a church that was really very benign to begin with, and later became much more liberal still. I know my husband's grandparents lived in Independence their whole lives, and I'm sure they knew some of these families. Kind of mindblowing!

I grew up in Knob Noster, Missouri. You did pronounce it right. The only reason the population is what it is here is because of the Air Force Base nearby. I was surprised when you mentioned it.
