Redemption Song
Cultura Profética Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Old pirates, yes, they rob I
Sold I to the merchant ships
Minutes after they took I
From the bottomless pit
But my hand was made strong
By the hand of the almighty
We forward in this generation
Triumphantly
Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom?
'Cause all I ever have
Redemption songs
Redemption songs
Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds
Have no fear for atomic energy
'Cause none of them can stop the time
How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look? Ooh
Some say it's just a part of it
We've got to fullfil the book

Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom?
'Cause all I ever have
Redemption songs
Redemption songs
Redemption songs
Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our mind
Woh, have no fear for atomic energy
'Cause none of them-a can-a stop-a the time
How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look?
Yes, some say it's just a part of it
We've got to fullfill the book
Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom?
'Cause all I ever had
Redemption songs
All I ever had
Redemption songs

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Cultura Profética's cover of Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" discuss themes of slavery, oppression, and the struggle for liberation. The first verse describes the experience of being sold into slavery by "old pirates," which likely refers to European colonial powers. The singer acknowledges that the experience has made them stronger, and they call on future generations to continue the fight for freedom.

The second verse encourages listeners to "emancipate yourselves from mental slavery," emphasizing that true liberation must come from within. The reference to "atomic energy" suggests that even modern technological advancements cannot fully suppress the human desire for freedom. The final lines ask how long prophets will be silenced and oppressed people will remain passive before calling on listeners to help sing songs of freedom and continue the work of those who came before.

Overall, Cultura Profética's version of "Redemption Song" is a call to action for its listeners to continue fighting for their own liberation and to work towards a more just and equal society.
