Delilah
Culture Wars Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And she walks
On everyone she knows
Blame it on Delilah
And she wants
Anything she wants she gets
Blame it on Delilah
And she calls
My name whenever she wants
Blame it on Delilah
I’m obsessed
As she drives me into debt
Blame it on Delilah
Tear me away
Tear me away, I’m on my hands and knees
Tear me away
Tear me away, I’m on my hands and knees
And she walks
On ground God hasn’t touched
Blame it on Delilah
And she flaunts
Everything she’s got she flaunts
Blame it on Delilah
And it’s hard
Everything not being enough
Blame it on Delilah
I’m obsessed
Inconsequential mess
Blame it on Delilah
Tear me away
Tear me away, I’m on my hands and knees

Tear me away
Tear me away, I’m on my hands and knees

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Delilah" by Culture Wars convey a story of a woman named Delilah who has a powerful and manipulative presence over the singer's life. The song suggests that Delilah has a way of walking over everyone she knows, implying that she has a dominant and controlling nature. The phrase "blame it on Delilah" indicates that the singer attributes their struggles and hardships to her influence.

Delilah seems to have a strong sense of entitlement, as she gets everything she wants. This could indicate a sense of greed or selfishness on her part. The repetition of her name throughout the song adds weight to her impact on the singer's life. The line "she drives me into debt" suggests that Delilah's influence goes beyond emotional control and extends to financial ruin.

The lyrics also portray Delilah as someone who flaunts her possessions and achievements. The line "on ground God hasn't touched" suggests that she behaves in a way that is above moral or spiritual values. The singer acknowledges that everything is not enough for Delilah, indicating she has an insatiable desire for more.

The repeated phrase "tear me away, I'm on my hands and knees" conveys the desperation the singer feels to escape from Delilah's grasp. It signifies their realization that they have become obsessed with her and are willing to be freed from the oppressive hold she has over them, even if it requires pleading or begging.

Overall, "Delilah" portrays a toxic and destructive relationship dynamic where Delilah exercises power and control over the singer, leading them to feel trapped and desperate for escape.

A lot to digest in this video and your core premise is strong the gaming culture has been shifted from escapism to perma crisis.

As for how the companies, media and communities are dealing with it is often summed up by a favorite quote, lies, dam lies and statistics.
This seems to reflect both that fear aspect you described and the reaction side both trying to avoid input that has value by lumping all critique with one group and giving them a bad name.

You now have me wondering will we ever be able to return to the world of pure escapism or will there always now be a sub set of the fandoms during my lifetime that will always assume the worst and attack each other rather than discuss.

I am hopeful that cd projekt red could be the big champions of producing games for your audience and non customer exploitation, but they are already moving in on some of the larger companies in terms of profit margins with only a few game franchises under there belt, but i don't think they are willing to be the leaders just lead by example which is still good.
Ubi soft with there big shake ups if they go along that same kind of model would be great there is a part of my mind that doubts it will happen, but i see the potential behind there choice helping to influence the industry one way or the other.

But i don't know that really we have anyone the industry looks to in that way anymore that would be willing to be that face person especially with the instant threat of cancel culture trying to hit you if a group of people do not like what you are saying.

@sectkills

Part of the cause for the drama is the you dont get an opinion stance.

Americans hold our right to have an opinion as almost holy. Its that whole first amendment.

When people use, and are using it more, the you dont get to talk attack, it sets people off.

This is part of why your cultural appropriation video set people off.

Im just trying to answer why the drama

I think you're behind on things. This was where the culture war started. All the pundants said "no one wants to take your boobie games" until someone did. Then they had a choice of stand up for those values, or continue to play to their social causes, and then went on to push like they were happy to see Senran Kagura's creator put the series on hold because it's too hard to sell in the current climate. For people that read way too much Harry Potter, you'd think they'd remember it takes a great deal more courage to stand up to your friends.

Today the fight over ownership of the hobby is real. I'm convinced far too many don't even want the hobby, they just saw a male dominated space that needed to be "fixed". Comic book sales alone should prove there's a lot of people complaining for things just to have them, not for personal enjoyment once they're made available. Movies have blamed males for the failure of female led films. You speak of an idealized concept, and it's one I'd like to see, but it isn't one I have faith in seeing because it isn't about enjoying the hobby. It's about controlling the hobby, if not society at large.

If pressed, I'll be honest and admit there's issues here. We have a high sense of individualism in a culture largely expecting conformity, and demanding it under various circumstances. We hid to be ourselves, and found friends also hiding that we could relate to. Now that reality we ran from found us and won't leave us be. I can't pretend there isn't issues there, but I also find it an area of concern. Far too often I find the attitude of people online is "will you just change your mind and give me everything I want at all risk and cost to yourself already because you are a horrible person if you don't". I'm smart enough to see the dehumanization in that, and it leaves me jumpy that even a kind hand is trying to coax me into the bad deal I'm otherwise fighting. That there is no concern for me in their actions, just concern that a difficult person is keeping them from their desires, and treating them like a human would mean sacrificing those, so try and change them. This has been a large part of how many people have treated me in life and work. I didn't need it here.

Sorry for the unloading. Therapy isn't covered under Alberta Health so I don't have many other outlets. Still, I think it's good context. A lot of the world is trying to change it into what they want, but can't or won't treat the people they want to change with respect in the process. As long as it seems like those favorites are being played, we're going to default to distrust, or even cling to it as the life raft keeping us from forced conformity under those that can't have things not their way in the world. I know it's difficult, and have had little luck on it myself, but sometimes we do have to stand up to our own side if they (to quote an old EDitorial from your husband's MUCH days) are doing the opposition's spin doctor work for them. It might not change the activist's mind, but it shows you have true empathy for those you are asking to bear the brunt of the risk and effort, making them less inclined to dig in.

this is a GREAT Comment! :-)

@k96man

This comment hit really close to home for me. I've been sitting here for like 10 minutes trying add to this comment thread in a meaningful way. But I just can't get my thoughts into words

@chrisw207

@Jean Gentry Just want to thank you back for the praise you tend to give me on my better comments. It probably doesn't seem like much, but I've been down lately, so it means a lot to me.

@Chris W You're very welcome :-)

Hildegard von Bingen Yeah, I don’t like the hypocrisy of video game or anime softcore porn is bad, but don’t you dare take my nudie mags and hardcore porn sites. It’s like either porn is universally bad and we should be banning a hell of a lot of movies for having sexual situations or we should be OK with what video games include. Or attractive females are bad in comics and video games and need to be replaced with realistic representations but girl’s magazines still feature slim attractive women selling tips on how you too can be gorgeous and mainstream Hollywood movies still feature girls that are unnaturally skinny.

@Gansimus

I think you missed highlighting The Witcher 3.

A game that treats its audience like adults, touching hard subjects, presenting a world full of grey areas. Developed by a company that respects their audience and their money. So separated from US Politics that they seem almost immune to it.

But what else would you expect from a company like CD Projekt Red? They were funded when Poland was under Soviet influence. These guys had to literally smuggle Console dev kits past customs into Poland . They grew up pirating video games using Radio and Cassette tapes.

What first world drama could touch these guys when they were forged like they were? CDPR has a vision, they stick to it, they nail the execution, and they get rewarded for it.

@effexon

this promotes the idea in one video, that to keep industry healthy, it has to be in area/city as far as possible from BOTH financial hub like NYC and power hub like Washington DC. in china it was like this also.

4:40 Hobbies never needed "community leaders" and I don't want them start using them now. If gaming had such things going into this culture war it would have been a over for us before it started. After seeing who went against gamers in GamerGate, it's clear that gaming would have went fully SJW immediately and gamers would have got kicked out. From the start, those with power and influence in the industry coordinated attacks against us, labeled us vile things, and said that the time of gamers were over. If there had been community leaders with power they most likely would have side with those that preach about "the right side of history" out of fear and we would have zero recourse. Just look at what happened in comics. SJWS took over, told the fans to get lost because they were biggots, and now the big two are in shambles.

Instead of hoping for some leader that would POSSIBLY be neutral, fans of whatever hobbies are just going to have to keep pushing back, voting with our wallets, and drive these political opportunists that never cared about these things out. We are making some strides but it's going to take time. Eventually companies have to make movie and there is enough past entertainment to keep us occupied until that happens.

If we were to go the way Liana is suggesting, where there are these leaders that would have some kind of guiding power, it would be worse. The position would become political and fans would have even less power because all the one who want to make things political would have to do is point at those leaders and say "See, you're wrong. We're right. Now shut up."

@Vienticus

When it comes to American behavior, it's a very deep topic. There are quite a few things going on here. One of the easiest things to point to is the general method of advertising. Many years ago, at least some advertising focused more on a person being a part of something. Now, the only advertising I ever really see is all egocentric and self-indulgent.

Many people also want a single point of failure. They want a single person to be the one responsible for everything going right or everything going wrong. (If you want I can talk more deeply on this, but I'll leave it there for now) With the two party system that the world is lead to believe exists in America, the blame gets to be simplified by othering. You'll hear a general "oh, it's the Republicans" or "oh, it's the Democrats" as a blanket catch-all. The mainstream media will also push this narrative saying that those that are liberal can only be one way and conservatives can be another. They'll never let you hear about a liberal who's a gun advocate or a conservative who is pro-choice. Americans get inundated constantly, and from all directions, in this notion that people have to be shoehorned into one of two categories that it brings out the most militant followers.

In the lines of the false dichotomy of our "two party" system, another big part was pushed into overdrive with George Bush's "No Child Left Behind". Since then you've seen a real destruction of anything that was left of actual education in this country and a full throttle push towards the Wilsonian doctrine of education. It's why i refuse to be a teacher, and if I do any educational work, it'll be strictly tutoring. I've already experienced the nightmare and I know people that still do. One person explained to me that he can never tell a child where to look for the answer, he must always give them answers. This is behavioral training. The child is being taught to get their answers from someone they view in authority rather than looking them up for themselves. On top of that, you have all these tests that have been instituted which only ever measure a child's ability to follow procedure, not to be able to understand what they're doing. Teachers jobs hinge on whether or not children pass these tests. This is the enactment of Woodrow Wilson's beliefs: that the masses should only be taught enough so that they can follow instructions to work in factories.

What you're seeing happen in America is the result of all of this culminating into a society that is ripping itself apart. It's been coming for a good three decades now. Thankfully, there are those of us who can see what's really going on, but people like myself have given up trying to talk sense into people. All I can do now is watch.
