A Sadness Song
Current 93 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When we touch the world
And it falls away
When we feel that we're born
Just to fall apart
And our mother lies in state
And the broken pitcher glistens
And the snow is at the window
Creating neither sign nor symbol
And the earth covers earth
And the mud lies in pools

Where the sand-dunes stretch unbroken
And the dry wind bends and sighs
And the geese are running harmless
And our desires are running wild
Then we're looking at the smoke
That's rising from the incense
Neither coming here nor going
Neither heaven here nor hell
Neither borning here nor birthing
Neither dying here nor death

And we're wrapped inside our troubles
And we're wrapped inside our pain
And wracked with fires with longing
And our eyes are blind with night
With our fingers clutching coins
And our thoughts burning with 'I'
And our eyes cannot be sated
With the world and its nightmares
With the world and its dreams
Though later they'll be filled
With a small handful of dust
And the gods appear on the altars
And we recognize their face
It's a face that we have carved there
And it's full of fear and longing
And promises and threats
But they neither stoop to conquer
Nor do they stoop to praise
And the mines are void of diamonds
That we carry in our rags

Then all the world seems
A sadness song

And all the world seems
A sadness song

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "A Sadness Song" by Current 93 are a reflection on the fleeting nature of life and the inevitability of death. The first stanza speaks of the transience of the physical world, where things fall apart or decay over time, as represented by the broken pitcher and the mud lying in pools. The second stanza describes a barren landscape, in which desires run wild, but ultimately lead to nothing. The smoke rising from the incense represents a sense of lostness and confusion, where the singer can neither find heaven nor hell, nor any real meaning or purpose in life.

The third stanza acknowledges the pain and suffering that accompany human existence. The singer is wrapped in troubles and pains, with their thoughts consumed by the constant need for material possessions, represented by the clutching of coins. The fourth stanza speaks of the insignificance of these worldly concerns in the face of death, where all the treasures we hold dear are reduced to mere dust. The final stanza brings the song full circle, with the world appearing as a "sadness song", reinforcing the idea that life is inherently fleeting and filled with sorrow.

More wisdom in this song than i am willing to take. Frightening...Depressing, in a soothing way. Not comparable to any other piece of music. David Tibet is a genius that has changed my life. I dont know if for the better or for the worse.

Really helps with bad hangovers etc. Lifesaver genre Neofolk is.

Great David

This is the song of my depression wich was severe for years, started since I was 18 at high school, I can feel every second of it with all my soul even now.. feels nostalgic god damn, anyways I wish good recovery to everyone listening to this right know, unless you wouldnt be listening to this, you would not have been listening to the sad sadness song

so it turns out that the line "with a small handful of dust" is most likely inspired by a Tibetan Buddhist anecdote in which a priest is arranging an altar to the gods/buddhas. the priest and a devotee decide that the altar is perfectly arranged, and complete. but then spontaneously the priest picks up "a small handful of dust" and tosses the dust onto the altar. He says "now it is perfect."

pardon me if i got a detail wrong in the telling of this story, as i can't remember where i read it.
