Currents from Connecticut formerly known as We Came As Plague, in 2009 they reformed as Currents and added Patrizio Arpaia on vocals to bring the band full circle. The band is described as having earth-shattering vocals, monstrous breakdowns and melodic riffs while encompassing that Connecticut groove. Currents is full of technicality, from striking the perfect balance of songs that make you head bang to beautifully crafted melodies.
Sometimes time is the missing ingredient needed in order for an idea to come to fruition. Such is the case with rising metalcore/djent band Currents, who after forming in 2011 spent the next few years discovering their identity and evolving into the thriving band they are today. After a change in vocalist in 2015, adding Brian Wille to the group, Jeff Brown (drums), Chris Wiseman (guitar), Ryan Castaldi (guitar) and Dee Cronkite (bass) solidified their lineup with members who shared a common current of energy that moved through one another towards the same vision.
That vision will come to light on the band's debut album due out this summer. Speaking of the forthcoming record, Brown says "it's definitely dark lyrically. Although some of the leads and drums might make it more upbeat. Over all the album is about Brian's thoughts and fighting his demons. We left all the vocals up to him so he could have full creative control. It turned out awesome and we are super proud of it. The instruments came together over 2 years of writing. We went into the studio with over 50 songs and ideas and left with 13 songs we believed were our best work."
The upcoming record will mark Currents' debut, full-length album, following two previous EPs with their former vocalist. The release also finds them partnering with their new label, SharpTone Records, which is home to contemporaries like Atilla, Emmure, Miss May I, We Came As Romans and While She Sleeps among others.

Dark horizons bridge the gap between Life and Loss
Through the windowpane
We behold the death of the gods
Pray for forgiveness, we have put the needs of the few on top again
Preying endlessly on the abyss of pride we've lost
We were the disadvantaged, yet we saw the signs
(Of demise)
Buried deep behind the lies
As we try to hide; our tragedy disguised
As we all stand petrified, we die alone; betrayed in time
We're lost
Falling apart again
In dust
Is this the way it ends?
Their backs are turned
Their eyes avert.
Washed away with all but a whisper
The lies we share, the blood we spread
As the knife burned deeper in my sunken skin
I think""how innocent we used to be.""
I only hope when they destroy our lives that they look us in the eyes
We're lost
Falling apart again
In dust
Is this the way it ends?
Their backs are turned
Their eyes avert.
Washed away with all but a whisper
The lies we share, the blood we spread
Ushering us to the end
Our fate is sealed; our time has come
The vultures circle over us
Forever marked
How could you turn your backs as it all falls apart?
FOREVER MARKED
With the knife to the neck of change, we stood there staring
A lie
All but a whisper; a back step toward progress
We're lost
Falling apart again
In dust
Is this the way it ends?
Their backs are turned
Their eyes avert.
Washed away with all but a whisper
The lies we share, the blood we spread
Ushering us to the end
Cast into the flame
Dark horizons bridge the gap between Life and Loss
Through the windowpane
We behold the death of the gods
We're lost
Falling apart again
In dust
Is this the way it ends?
We're lost
Falling apart again
In dust
Is this the way it ends?
The lyrics of Currents's song "Forever Marked" depict a sense of loss, betrayal, and the destructive nature of humanity. The opening lines "Cast into the flame, Dark horizons bridge the gap between Life and Loss" suggest a metaphorical journey into darkness and the blurred boundaries between life and death. The reference to "the death of the gods" implies a loss of faith or the crumbling of belief systems.
The lyrics touch upon themes of pride and selfishness, as the song talks about putting the needs of the few above the needs of many. There is a sense of tragedy and isolation, with the lines "We were the disadvantaged, yet we saw the signs (Of demise), The truth still denied, Buried deep behind the lies." It highlights the denial of the harsh reality and the desperation to hide the impending disaster.
The chorus emphasizes the feeling of being lost and falling apart amidst the chaos. It questions whether this chaotic state of affairs is the way it will ultimately end. The repeated mention of backs turned and eyes averted symbolizes the lack of empathy or willingness to confront the consequences of one's actions. The imagery of being "washed away with all but a whisper" suggests the insignificance and fleeting nature of our existence.
