A Gentleman Caller
Cursive Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Your gentleman caller
Well, he's been calling on another
He loves his forbidden fruit
And as it dribbles down his chin
He cries "Baby I've been drinking with some friends
Now how about a little kiss?"
Bad boy
Rub his nose in it
What a mess
And he's playing dumb

I'm not looking for a lover
All those lovers are liars
I'd never lie to you

You say you want to get even?
You say you want to get your bad man good?
Well, are you in the mood?
You bet
Go
Doesn't it feel good?
Being bad, and getting worse

But in the morning
On the silver dawn of Sunday
You're not sure what you've done
Who told you love was fleeting?
Sometimes men can be so misleading
To take what they need from you

Whatever you need to make you feel
Like you can move on behind the wheel
The sunrise is just over that hill
The worst is over
Whatever I said to make you think
That love's the remission of the weak
This morning we loved like weaklings
The worst is over

The worst is over
The worst is over

Overall Meaning

In Cursive's song "A Gentleman Caller," the lyrics explore the complicated emotions that come with infidelity and a desire for revenge. The first stanza sets the scene of the titular gentleman caller, who has been seeing someone else, referred to as the "forbidden fruit." As he indulges in his sinful behavior, he attempts to charm his way back into the singer's good graces, claiming to have just been drinking with friends and requesting a kiss. The singer, however, is not interested in a fling or a lover; she sees through the lies of those who deceive with promises of love.

The chorus suggests a desire for retribution, with the singer asking if the listener is in the mood for evening the score with a "bad man." However, this desire is muddled by conflicting feelings - the line "doesn't it feel good?/being bad and getting worse" could be interpreted as a genuine desire for vengeance, or as a wistful longing for the passion and risk that comes with forbidden love. As the song progresses into the second verse, the singer questions whether love is fleeting and chastises men who take what they need from women without regard for their feelings.

The final stanza provides a glimmer of hope - the worst is over, and the sunrise is just over the hill. The singer acknowledges that their morning lovemaking was "like weaklings," but there is a sense of moving forward and rebuilding from the pain. Overall, "A Gentleman Caller" is a complex exploration of the emotional fallout of infidelity and the difficult process of healing and moving on.

I love how the mood-shift in the instrumentation halfway through the song mirrors the mood-shift in the lyrics at that same point. The first half is chaotic and impetuous, as if the singer is drunk and therefore completely unconcerned with any potential consequences that his recklessness might lead to, and the second is mellow and sentimental, as if the shame of next-morning-sobriety is setting in, along with the guilt that comes with remembering last night's actions.

Griffen Clark I used to have this on cd and I came to youtube to find that song from the ugly organ "that made me tear up" and lo and behold, someone with the exact same onion cutting problem from five years ago
