It began in 2001 as the project for Dan Whitford. In 2003, Whitford recruited a band, and in 2005 toured internationally for the first time, visiting London, New York and Los Angeles. They have played with international acts Franz Ferdinand, TV on the Radio, Pretty Girls Make Graves and Junior Senior, amongst others. Cut Copy is signed to the record label Modular in Sydney.
In 2004, Cut Copy released their debut album Bright Like Neon Love. The music is written and produced by frontman Dan Whitford, who is also a graphic designer and DJ. Cut Copy released three singles from this album: "Saturdays," "Future," and "Going Nowhere."
They also released a Fabriclive album featuring a mix of several synth/retro/elektropop songs such as (for example) MSTRKRFT and New Young Pony Club.
Their second album, In Ghost Colours, was released in 2008. Four singles were issued: "So Haunted," "Hearts on Fire," "Lights and Music," and "Far Away."
In 2011, Cut Copy released their third album, Zonoscope, which included the singles "Where I'm Going," "Take Me Over," and "Need You Now." Zonoscope marked the addition of bassist and synthesist Ben Browning to the Cut Copy lineup, making the group a four-piece. Browning had previously supported the band as a touring musician throughout the In Ghost Colours Tour.

Alisa
Cut Copy Lyrics

And many hearts unraveled
I've seen worlds through many eyes
I'm dancing in and often
Will carry lonely hearts to you
Don't think that I'm your shrink now
I don't know what to say or do
Love to see your heart again
Beats like this
Treat it like your only friends
A piece like this
Though our love was never meant
It beats like this
A name I knew from a song
Is it wrong to cry for you?
Alisa
Alisa
It's funny how it isn't
And life can sometimes be confused
You heard I love you, baby
Words in a song, they're not for you
Love to see your heart again
Beats like this
Treat it like your only friends
A piece like this
Though our love was never meant
It beats like this
A name I knew from a song
Is it wrong to cry for you?

The song Alisa by Cut Copy is an emotional ballad about a mysterious woman named Alisa. The song starts with the singer saying that they have been travelling for ten thousand years and have seen multiple hearts breaking. The singer has seen different worlds through different eyes. However, they find solace in dancing and carrying lonely hearts to Alisa. Even though they cannot help Alisa as a shrink would, they still hope to see her heart again with beats as mesmerizing as hers. The singer admits that their love was never meant to be, but they still cannot help but cry for Alisa.
As the song progresses, it becomes clear that the singer is in love with Alisa, but she doesn't reciprocate their feelings. The lyrics mention that Alisa heard the singer say "I love you, baby" in a song, but the words weren't meant for her. The singer is aware of Alisa's confusion and accepts it. The song ends on the melancholic repetition of the name Alisa.
The meaning of the song is open to interpretation. Still, it could be considered a tribute to a woman who has a significant impact on the singer's life, even though their love isn't reciprocated. The lyrics convey the message that it's okay to love someone from afar without expecting anything in return, and sometimes, music is the only way to express those emotions.
